We practice general poverty law and seek to use legal process to assist t

he indigent with breaking down barriers so that they can overcome poverty and be self-sufficient. Our mission is to provide legal representation to those who cannot otherwise afford an attorney. KLS primarily focuses on helping low income individuals. Our clients may be a crime victim, abused, disabled and/or elderly. Our clients may need legal help to remove a barrier that will increase, protect or enhance their income; or maybe the person needs help with protecting or securing housing. Examples of work we do include:
Public assistance denials. If you have been unfairly denied public assistance we might be able to help with an appeal. We might be able to help you if your landlord is not treating you fairly. Family Law Issues (Divorce, Paternity and/or Custody). If you are in an abusive relationship and need help to exit the relationship we can potentially help you with a plan to protect you physically and financially. We can go to court to obtain support orders and clearly outlined parenting plans. Bad Debts. If you are being treated unfairly by a debt collector we may be able to help, especially if keeping your job feels impossible because all you do is go to court. If you are being unfairly garnished we may have a solution. Foreclosure Defense. We defend foreclosure cases. If you are worried that your home will be taken in foreclosure we may be able to help you obtain solutions you didn’t know were available. Unemployment Appeals. Were you unfairly denied unemployment benefits? We can advise you and potentially represent you. End of Life Planning (POA, Wills). If you are over the age of 60 and need a durable power of attorney, living will or simple estate plan, we can help at no charge. Protection Orders. Are you being physically abused? We represent domestic violence victims and obtain protection orders.

The Geary County District Court, Kansas Legal Services, and the Geary County Bar Association are hosting an Expungement Clinic at the Geary County District Court, 138 E. 8th Street, Junction City, KS.

Walk-ins are welcome but registration makes the process quicker.

Our Story

Kansas Legal Services is a nonprofit law firm. It specializes in providing legal representation to the most vulnerable in your community, including, victims of domestic violence, children, crime victims, the elderly, and the disabled. Attorneys with KLS practice general poverty law; they use the courts to help low income individuals break down legal barriers preventing them from being more economically stable. Success happens when KLS helps the individual increase their ability to be more self-sufficient so that they can overcome poverty on their own. In many cases the individual will remain in poverty but their quality of life will be increased; this often happens with disabled and elderly clients. For example, KLS might help them obtain benefits like housing, access to healthcare or other financial assistance they were being wrongly denied. KLS's mission is to provide legal representation to those who cannot otherwise afford an attorney, especially in situations where a legal solution will provide a positive impact.
