What Is a Guardian ad Litem in a Custody Case? 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦⚖️

If you’re involved in a child custody case, you may hear the term Guardian ad Litem (GAL). But what exactly does that mean?

A Guardian ad Litem is a person appointed by the court to help represent and protect the best interests of a child during a legal proceeding.
In a custody case, a GAL may:
• Meet with the children and, when appropriate, the parents
• Speak with teachers, counselors, medical professionals, or other relevant individuals
• Review records and other information related to the child
• Investigate the family’s circumstances
• Make recommendations to the court regarding custody, parenting time, or other issues affecting the child

It’s important to understand that a GAL is not your attorney and does not represent either parent. Their role is focused on the child’s best interests and providing the court with information to assist in making custody decisions.

Meet our new office manager, Maranda! 👋

Maranda is a Manhattan native and recent graduate of Kansas State University, where she earned her Master of Arts in Creative Writing.

For the past two years, Maranda taught English 100 at KSU while completing her master’s project, a collection of flash nonfiction and prose poetry exploring relationships and nostalgia.

As she transitions from the classroom into the legal field, Maranda is excited to bring her creativity, communication skills, and love of writing to our office.
