When a family member or friend with dementia enters assisted living, it is important to understand how the facility will keep the person safe. The terms "memory care" and "dementia care" are used freely and differently. For some facilities, it may mean a secured unit which residents can only exit if they enter the correct code on a keypad. For other facilities, it may only mean that the memory impaired are kept in a separate, yet unsecured wing or given certain therapies but they are allowed to move around the facility freely. This article points out what can go wrong if proper protective measures are not in place. The article also points out the need for federal legislation to ensure safety.
