Well folks, summer is winding down, and that means it’s time for our students to head back to school.
As classes begin, you’ll see more children walking to school, riding bicycles, waiting at bus stops, and crossing our streets and highways. Their safety depends on all of us.
Here’s our message, simple and straightforward:
Slow down. Put the phone away. Pay attention.
Those yellow school buses aren’t just another vehicle on the road. They’re carrying Greer County’s most precious cargo- our children.
When you see a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, STOP. There are no exceptions and no excuses. Taking a few extra moments to stop could save a child’s life.
Please remember to slow down in school zones and obey the posted speed limits. Children can be unpredictable, and it’s our responsibility as adults to drive with extra caution.
Throughout the school year, deputies with the Greer County Sheriff’s Office will have an increased presence around our schools, school zones, and bus routes. Our goal is education and prevention, but we will not hesitate to enforce Oklahoma’s traffic laws when necessary.
If you choose to ignore school bus stop laws, speed through school zones, drive distracted, or place our children in danger, you should expect to be held accountable. Citations—and when appropriate, criminal charges—will be issued.
Keeping our children safe is one of our highest priorities, and that’s a responsibility we all share.
To our parents, thank you for trusting us to help protect your children. To our teachers, administrators, and school staff, thank you for investing in the future of Greer County. To our bus drivers, thank you for the important work you do every day to safely transport our students.
Let’s work together to make this school year a safe, successful, and memorable one for every child.
