Persistence pays off. I recently settled a case for a client valued at over $130k. The other side was dug in and it seemed like this may go the distance. A detailed request for documents had the other side realizing their true exposure. The advantage we had? I read the contract and they didn't.

Cases turn on details, but you need an attorney who can read, understand and use them to your advantage.

The choice between a last will and testament and a revocable living trust is one of the most consequential decisions in estate planning — and one of the most frequently misunderstood. The correct answer depends on the composition of the estate, the client’s family structure, probate avoidance objectives, and incapacity planning considerations.

This post addresses the legal distinctions between the two instruments under New Hampshire law and the factors that should drive the analysis.

Should New Hampshire clients use a will, a revocable living trust, or both? This guide explains the legal differences, probate implications, and which option fits your situation.

She trusted her family.
That trust nearly cost her everything.
Last week, I won guardianship for two adult children trying to protect their mother.
What brought them to court wasn’t confusion, or a paperwork issue, or a routine aging concern.
It was financial exploitation.
Another family member—someone the mother trusted—had quietly taken thousands of dollars and then disappeared. No transparency. No accountability. Just missing money and a vulnerable parent left behind.
By the time my clients came to me, the damage was already done.
This is the part most people don’t realize:
Guardianship cases are rarely just about care.
They’re often about control, access, and money—and once exploitation starts, it escalates fast.
We were able to step in, stop further harm, and put lawful protections in place. But this case should never have reached crisis mode in the first place.
Here’s the hard truth I see over and over again:
• Families assume “it won’t happen to us”
• They delay uncomfortable conversations
• They rely on informal promises instead of legal safeguards
And by the time something feels wrong, the legacy is already being drained.
Legacy protection isn’t just about wills and trusts.
It’s about who has authority, when, and under what limits—before someone abuses it.
If you have aging parents, vulnerable family members, or shared financial responsibilities, don’t wait until the court is the only option left.
Planning early protects more than assets.
It protects dignity, relationships, and peace of mind.
If this story hits close to home, you’re not alone—and you’re not overreacting.
This is exactly the moment when legal guidance matters.

Protecting what people have built is why I became an attorney.

Whether it's a family making sure their home passes to the right people, a small business owner who got burned by a bad contract, a property owner fighting a zoning decision, or a federal contractor racing a 10-day protest deadline — every matter has real stakes.

At Granfield Legal Services, I work directly with every client across four practice areas:

— Wills, Trusts & Estate Planning (NH & MA, flat-fee)
— Contract Law & Dispute Resolution
— Land Use & Zoning (New Hampshire)
— Government Contracts Litigation (Nationwide)

If you're in New Hampshire or Massachusetts and need legal help — or know someone who does — I'd be glad to connect.

Did you know that if you die without a will in New Hampshire, the state decides who gets your home, your savings, and everything else you've worked for?

For unmarried couples, blended families, and anyone with stepchildren — the result can be devastating. Your long-term partner could receive nothing. Stepchildren you've raised for years could be completely left out.

I just published a plain-language guide breaking down exactly what New Hampshire law does with your estate if you don't have a will — including a full breakdown of who inherits what in every common family situation.

Roses are red. Violets are blue.
Your prenup might still matter… even after you. 💍

Most couples think prenuptial agreements are only about divorce. They’re not. A prenup can shape what happens when one spouse dies — sometimes in ways families never expect.

Valentine’s Day is about forever. Let’s make sure your “forever” is protected.

A prenuptial agreement doesn’t automatically disappear when a spouse dies. Here’s how prenups can affect inheritance, probate, and your estate plan.

A recent NH Superior Court decision vacated a zoning board denial because the board failed to make clear, lawful findings tied to the zoning ordinance.

Speculation isn’t evidence — and courts will enforce that rule.

Zoning Boards Must Explain Their Decisions — Courts Will Enforce That Rule Zoning boards have discretion, but they do not have a free pass to deny applications without explaining why. In a recent New Hampshire Superior Court decision I got a win for my client where a zoning board’s denial of a s...
