One way to avoid history repeating itself is to learn history. Among the world's most historic events is the reunification of Germany, which is celebrated on this day. The U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian, explains why this day is so important throughout Germany: "After World War II, Germany was occupied and divided into four zones administered by the main Allied powers. After tensions mounted between the Soviet Union on the one side, and the United States, Great Britain, and France on the other, the Western powers combined their zones and allowed the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Soviets responded by forming the German Democratic Republic (GDR) to govern their occupation zone. The United States refused to recognize the GDR until 1974. The GDR was absorbed by the FRG in 1990 when Germany reunified."

Recently, the Florida shareholders attended the 50-year anniversary of Deutsch-Amerikanische Juristen-Vereinigung (DAJV e.V.) - German-American Lawyers'​ Association held in Berlin, Germany. The DAJV promotes mutual understanding and friendship between the USA and Europeans.

There is no substitute for in-person meetings to fully appreciate the distinctions between the legal system in the USA as compared to the legal system in Germany and the EU. Our means of passing legislation, constitutional provisions, and views on the proper role of government are vastly different. These differences often shape our viewpoints and lead us to form judgments when they should invite us to seek a better understanding. Despite our differences, DAJV lawyers share the common purpose of enhancing the delivery of legal services for our respective clients and creating lasting friendships.

It was a sincere pleasure to meet with young professionals still completing their legal studies, legal professionals navigating the practice of law, shareholders making strategic decisions for their law firms, and seasoned professionals who teach or who have retired but remain committed to improving the legal profession. It was especially great to meet up with one of our previous German Rechstreferendar, Johannes Deutsch! A truly worthwhile experience.

As practicing attorneys, we recognize that there are limits on free speech. A recent case resulting in the discipline of two Orlando attorneys is a good time to reflect on those limits and perhaps on our collective responsibility to maintain a high degree of integrity in our profession.

While we may disagree, and sometimes vehemently disagree, with the decision of judges before whom we appear, it is never acceptable to impugn a judge's character or foment violence. We are advocates, not activists.
