I recently represented a client who had cancer but was in remission. She had been discriminated against by her employer and fired immediately after she returned from leave. She was an amazing woman with a strong faith and determination despite the adversity she was facing. After we settled her case, she sent me a card with Superwoman on the front and wrote a very special note thanking me for being there for her. When I received the card I thanked her and told her how wonderful she was and that she was a very strong and special woman. I just found out that she passed away. It was so difficult to hear and I have been so sad since I learned about her passing. In reflecting on this, it is a constant reminder that as an attorney, I am not just there to give legal advice, but I am there because someone has placed their trust in me and my firm to take care of them and to represent them with everything we have inside of us. Our firm is blessed to have many, many wonderful former and current clients, and we are lucky that they have chosen us to represent them. They are all supermen and superwomen in our eyes as was this special client. I will never forget her.

The practice of working outside standard work hours is so ingrained in American culture that a majority of full-time salaried employees in the U.S. would work off-the-clock even if it was against company policy.
