Tuesday Tip: In Wisconsin family law, if you are co-parenting a minor with the biological parent of your child, and you are concerned about drug or alcohol issues with the other parent during their placement time, you should file a motion with the court as soon as possible. Attorney Gretchen Burgess attended the Annual “Accelerate Your Business for Women” Conference hosted by SCORE Wisconsin on Monday, September 28, at the Kalahari Resort & Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells. The firm has sponsored this event for three years, which offers educational sessions and professional development for entrepreneurs on topics such as finance, marketing, technology, business resources, legal needs, and general life skills. SCORE is a national organization with local chapters, including throughout Wisconsin, that provide guidance, mentorship, and training for small business owners. Tuesday Tip: A Living Will has nothing to do with your assets. Rather, it is the generic term for an “advance directive” or “declaration to physicians” that is used if you become incapacitated. It indicates your wishes regarding life support or resuscitation efforts, ventilation, feeding, pain management, and even organ donation. A Healthcare Power of Attorney document is more comprehensive than a Living Will, as it can name an individual to make healthcare decisions for you if you become incapacitated. An estate planning lawyer can help with these and other legal documents.

Earlier this month, some of our golfers participated in the 2nd Annual Dane County Courthouse Golf Outing at Bridges Golf Course in Madison. Murphy Desmond’s foursome, named the “Murphy Desmond Mulligans,” competed in the 9-hole, after-hours, just-for-fun outing along with local attorneys, judges, courthouse staff, and law firm personnel. Tuesday Tip: A Limited Liability Company (LLC) utilizes pass-through taxation, meaning the company does not file or pay its own taxes. Rather, the LLC owners/members claim the LLC’s profits or losses on their personal taxes. Still, the LLC should have its own bank account where taxed profits (member income) can remain for the LLC to use for future business expenses. A business or tax attorney can assist with LLC taxation issues.
