I absolutely love Thanksgiving.

From when I first moved to American in 2011, different families took me in at Thanksgiving. I was immediately welcomed into their unique traditions that had nothing to do with “stuff” and everything to do with the people they loved.

Time and again my clients tell me that they care about family above all else.

Many of us find ourselves on the benefits page of our HR portal this time of year and we are not there willingly. 🤦🏼‍♀️

🚫After going through the painful process of working out deductibles, family coverage and ultimately making an insane guess about what the next year will bring for your family, your inclination may be to just shut your laptop and move on. 🚫

👏🏻Take the extra minute and check that all of your accounts that require beneficiary designations are up-to-date.👏🏻

It is worth doing and it will mean a lot to your family if they have a need it. I can draft you the best will in the world but it cannot touch those accounts.

Thanksgiving is the best time to sign your Healthcare Proxies! 🩺

First, hopefully you are lucky enough to be celebrating with enough of your favorite people to witness (witnesses cannot be the proxies)

Second, there are enough people to remember that you have one: “wait, she does have a proxy! We signed them after pie!”

But most important, let’s normalize these documents. If 2020 onwards has taught us anything, its that health is not guaranteed and family (even if it the family you have made for yourself) is everything. So grab some pie and make a plan. 🥧🍁

First, hopefully you are lucky enough to be celebrating with enough of your favorite people to witness (witnesses cannot be the proxies)

For many Americans, this may be the first indoor holiday gathering with family since 2019. If visiting with friends and family is part of your plan this year, take the opportunity to create or update these vital documents while you are with witnesses. It may seem like a weird way to give thanks but....

If you have minor children, you need to appoint a Guardian to look after them if you are hospitalized or incapacitated. These are difficult things to think about but get it done today and I promise you will feel better immediately! It's probably the easiest thing on your To-Do List to check off!

Right now you can go to my website and download a Guardianship Power of Attorney for FOR FREE! 🙌🏻

Fill it out yourself and take it to a notary. You can do this without the help of an attorney and it means that if you suffer incapacity, imprisonment or deportation (basically any situation in which you cannot look after them) there is a clearly appointed person who can.

While it is not a substitute for a full estate plan (which includes guardianship appointment and trusts from your minor kids) there is one thing you can do today to make sure your kids are looked after if you cannot.
