This year’s artist for our Pastels on 5th was Samantha Garber. The inspiration for Samantha’s design was to honor a young friend of the family who battled a brain tumor at the tender age of five. Wyatt Gentry lost his battle on February 1, 2020.

Samantha’s gold ribbon flows through the things in every child’s life and ends in the blank pages of a book, with endless possibilities of dreams and imagination. Samantha will often include this gold ribbon in her artwork to honor this sweet, kind, and loving little boy.

The pirate ship depicts Peter Pan, the little boy who never grew up but experienced many adventures in life as a young boy. The Jurassic Park dinosaur skull reminds us of a movie both boys and girls loved. The Starship and TIE Fighters battle in galaxies far, far away to the delight of a young boys and girls who love everything Star Wars. Harry Potter and friends are seen riding broomsticks with the Golden Snitch in a Quidditch match to remind us of a young boy who enjoyed the fantasy world of wizardry along with Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The Lorax trees bring bright and fun colors and adventures to children through the timeless story by Dr. Seuss. Samantha will always remember the day the world said goodbye to Wyatt. There was a beautiful sunset of pinks, yellows, and blues in the sky, a breath-taking sight that will always be in her mind.

This is the 4th year Samantha has participated in Pastels on 5th and the 3rd year supporting pediatric cancer with the Gold Awareness Ribbon. This event has taught Samantha how to get pastels to blend, portray, and adhere well to a concrete square. Samantha works in many art mediums, frequently rotating from one to another and learning new ones. As an experienced crocheter, Samantha was awarded second place at the Larimer County Fair this summer for a cardigan she created. Congratulations!
