What kind of moron does it take to try two different cases with life sentences on the line within a month? Apparently me! In my defense (turns out that defense is something I have been pretty good at lately lol... please read on). I thought both, or at least one, would either be continued or settle, as most cases do. Turns out, I am a just a lawyer and not a psychic or prophet (or artist, as my recent jury learned the hard way)...
As I posted somewhat recently, in the first trial, the jury reached a great verdict for my client approximately at this time of day, exactly 4 weeks ago to the date. The one I have had going on for this past week also went insanely well despite it being the weirdest trial of my life (PM or text or whatever for details... In short, it was all just crazy all around).
Regardless, after a LONG day yesterday, and after several other days of trial (none of which went normally btw), the late night verdicts came in last night. My client's potential life sentence was totally averted when the jury acquitted him of all of the charges we initially tried!!!!! After that verdict, I stipulated to the charge of convicted felon in possession of a firearm (because he was a convicted felon, and the jury had watched a video of him with a firearm like 5 times... no need to waste their time- they did a great job and needed no more of me talking a lot).
It has been a great, but simultaneously exhausting,
week/month/year/decade/century/millennium that this has all happened in... I am honestly too tired to know at this point haha. My calendar says it's exactly 4 weeks since the last verdict though. While I do remember yesterday's verdict, I trust calendars far more than my brain's recollection at this point.
Congrats to my client on the acquittals, and thank you to the lovely and brilliant Jennifer Bolt for her help with selecting the jury. She knows how to pick a good one!
