If you have an order of deportation or removal from an immigration judge or from ICE officers but have not yet been deported or left the U.S. voluntarily, do not leave the country without first consulting an immigration lawyer.

A deportation order may be reopened or challenged under certain circumstances, but this is only possible if you have remained in the U.S. since the order was issued by ICE or a judge. Leaving—even briefly—could jeopardize your ability to reopen your case or seek other forms of relief.

Great reminder that in the face of immigration enforcement actions, you and those around you have rights. ICE has one job - enforcing the immigration laws by removing individuals from the country when the laws permit that action. As you see below, they use many tools to get their job done.

Often, ICE officers depend on good faith cooperation, instead of following a judicial process. I’ve heard so many times that people want to do things correctly. However, if you are looking for an advocate, an ICE officer is not that person. Protect your right to privacy and seek the assistance of qualified counsel. There are many benefits or protections from deportation - it is not ICE’s duty to advise you of your full rights under the law.
