The lawyer who wrote the TX abortion law is more explicit in this amicus brief for the Mississippi case. They’re coming for Roe but also Obergefell (marriage equality) and Lawrence (de-criminalizing private same-sex acts) and Griswold (re access to birth control). See p. 32 of PDF. It’s a neat parlor trick of saying equal rights are fine in context of Loving because it is contrary to Civil rights act of 1866. These other rights are about gender which is subject to less scrutiny. But that is not no scrutiny. Anyway, the right is going for an authoritarian, straight Christian country and getting closer with every election cycle.

These have real world consequences of course. I was married in 2011 and moved to a state that did not recognize my marriage. The consequences included I could not be on husband’s health insurance and had a $10K medical bill - a minor problem but indicative of the two experiences in red v blue states if we go back on that right. Now I live in a blue state so would be protected again. Doesn’t seem fair.

This is a new case I am involved with. Beverly Hills is the only LA area jurisdiction to prosecute non-violent peaceful protestors for curfew violations for a protest which was described as joyous with dancing in the streets. It was organized by the Black Future Project.

Beverly Hills is prosecuting 25 people arrested for alleged curfew violations even though L.A. County has declined to take such cases to court.

Was happy to co-sign a letter to City Attorney urging this outcome. Protesters are not criminals and should not be prosecuted. The LA City Attorney agrees!
