ILA MEMBERS HELP INCREASE CONTAINER MOVES AT THE PORT OF CHARLESTON AS IT SEES A 3% INCREASE COMPARED TO THIS TIME LAST YEAR
CHARLESTON PORT UPDATE:
South Carolina Ports continues to show strong performance with 2.6 million TEUs handled this year—a 3% increase year-over-year!
These numbers reflect the region’s growing importance in global trade.
The Port of Charleston facilities span three municipalities—Charleston, North Charleston, and Mount Pleasant—with six public terminals owned and operated by the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA). These facilities handle containers, motor vehicles and other rolling stock, non-containerized goods and project cargo, as well as Charleston’s cruise ship operation. Additional facilities in the port are privately owned and operated, handling bulk commodities like petroleum, coal and steel.

ILA MEMBERS SPEAK TO A TRUCK DRIVER AT SEALAND IN PORT NEWARK, NJ IN 1956
The original SeaLand was founded by Malcolm McLean, an American trucking entrepreneur who revolutionized the shipping industry by packing goods into containers which can be transported quickly.
On April 26, 1956, McLean introduced the world’s first container ship, the Ideal X, which sailed from Newark, NJ to Houston, TX with 58 containers on its deck.
In 1999, Maersk Line bought SeaLand and it is now known as one of the largest container shipping lines in the world.
ILA International President Harold J. Daggett began his career in the ILA in 1967 and moved over to SeaLand in 1968 and remained there until he became a delegate for ILA Local 1804-1 in 1980.

At nearly 1,200 feet long and 167 feet wide, this giant can hold more than 15,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) containers making it one of the BIGGEST ships to ever dock at our port!

ILA Local 28 Container Inspector Rob Embrey (Port Houston, TX) visited APM Terminals in Port Elizabeth, NJ, where Local 1804-1 TIR Inspector Sean Horsfield walked him through TIR operations.

Rob also got a first look at the new Port of Discovery system, now being implemented across East and Gulf Coast ILA ports.

Big thanks to Local 1804-1 TIR Foreman Tim Lindsay for the warm welcome to “The Kitchen” at APM today!

Jim McNamara will be honored as the inaugural recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Irish Echo Labor Awards on September 12, 2025, in New York City.

With over 44 years of dedicated service to the International Longshoremen’s Association — as PR Director, union leader, and now Chief of Staff — Jim has been a tireless advocate for workers and the ILA. His Irish heritage, journalistic roots, and decades of leadership embody the spirit of the award.

We are proud to celebrate Jim’s remarkable career and his lifelong commitment to the labor movement and the ILA family.

Devastating flash floods have claimed at least 80 lives, including 28 children, and left more missing.
Families in Kerr County and beyond are clinging to hope as the crisis continues with more rain expected.
To all affected: you are not alone. We grieve with you, we pray for you, and we urge everyone in low-lying areas to seek safety now.
