There's been a lot of talk lately about court reporters ending depositions by Code and refusing to stipulate away the original transcript. We want to tell you why it's happening and how best to handle it.

There is a serious, growing shortage of court reporters in California. At the 2018 National Court Reporter’s Association Annual Convention, the CEO of a national court reporting agency, reported that the agency cannot cover 200 jobs each month! A prominent Florida firm also noted that they tell their clients booking in California, to book three weeks in advance to guarantee coverage! There simply are not enough court reporters in California. We know last minute scheduling is sometimes unavoidable and we will always be there to help! We just want to make sure we are being as proactive as possible in protecting our clients and serving their needs, so please schedule your depositions as early as possible. Rescheduling is never a problem.

The 2013-14 Court Reporting Industry Outlook Report by Drucker Worldwide, indicated that several factors would combine to “create by 2018 a critical shortfall,” particularly in California. These factors include (1) increased legal activity, (2) new opportunities for stenographers outside of the legal profession, (3) decreased enrollment and graduation rates for court reporters, and (4) significant retirement rates.
