Get Jewish Divorce Justice "Get Jewish Divorce Justice, Inc." is a non-profit organization working to get prevent abuse in the Jewish community. INTERVENTION

PREVENTION
We promote the Beth Din of America’s prenuptial/arbitration agreement to deter get refusal through monetary sanctions, together with an alternative agreement that would resolve
extreme cases where the husband refuses to cooperate or cannot be found. We spearheaded the efforts to revise the BDA Prenup for California that will be publicized in 2014. EDUCATION
We conduct seminars on the le

gal and halachic underpinnings of Jewish prenuptial and arbitration agreements for couples, educators, attorneys, and rabbis. We design curricula for high school and college students to raise awareness of today’s agunah problem and an understanding of existing halachic solutions. We coordinate an annual International Agunah Day Conference, on or before the Fast of Esther, for communal learning in solidarity with communities throughout the diaspora and Israel. We serve as a liaison between the agunah, the beth din, and attorneys. We advise agunot on how to navigate the beth din process. Where appropriate we mobilize
rabbinic and communal pressure on get refusers to give the get. Tehillim Campaign. We galvanize grassroots public awareness and support by reciting Tehillim (psalms) in schools, shuls, and women’s Tehillim groups for every agunah who provides her Hebrew name to us. HEALING
Agunah Support Group Through Art and Creative Expression. We provide a safe setting for former and current agunot and their adult daughters to develop a renewed sense of hope and empowerment. In collaboration with A Window Between Worlds. The Agunah Monologues. We record testimonials to promote healing and to advocate for proposed legislation and mprovements in beth din policies. ADVOCACY
We lobby for legislation to deter get refusal, such as authorizing courts to consider Get refusal as a factor in determining spousal support, custody, and applications for a bifurcated divorce.

✨One-on-one resource guidance with a licensed social worker for mental health, legal aid, employment, food, and loans

✨Expanded partnerships to advance coercive control laws in Florida and New York

✨Hosted educational webinars for attorneys and Agunot on using coercive control laws to help deter Get refusal

✨Coached women on dating, recognizing relationship red flags, and the importance of Jewish prenuptial agreements

As we reflect on the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash, our tradition teaches that it fell for two powerful reasons: Sinat Chinam - gratuitous hatred, such as get refusal (Baba Metzia 30b), and a rigid adherence to the strict letter of the law (din) rather than lifnim mishurat hadin - beyond the letter of the law (Yoma 9b).

Our sages teach that the Jewish people are rachmanim b’nei rachmanim -compassionate descendants of compassionate ancestors. Let us live up to that legacy.

We share this list of 19 Agunot in need of prayers - not just as names, but as souls waiting to be seen, supported, and freed. There are others who are afraid to be named.

We urge you to speak with your rabbis and community leaders. Encourage action. Encourage teshuvah because saving an Agunah is rebuilding part of the Beit Hamikdash.

Esther Macner, Esq. is the founder and president of Get Jewish Divorce Justice, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit combating get abuse and advocating for the rights of Jewish women.

A former Senior Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn’s Domestic Violence Bureau, Esther was instrumental in the passage of California’s Coercive Control statute, expanding the legal definition of domestic violence to include non-physical abuse. She also led the revision of the Beth Din of America’s Prenuptial Agreement for California.

Esther lectures widely on coercive control, including at the 2021 and 2022 America’s Conference to End Coercive Control, USC Gould School of Law’s Cross-Cultural Dispute Resolution Panel, and the Hadassah Attorneys and Judges Council (2022).

She also served as an instructor for Break the Cycle, leading workshops for LAUSD teens on dating and domestic violence awareness. With a background in psychology, rabbinic texts, and law, Esther brings a uniquely integrated perspective to legal and religious advocacy.
