Lawmakers in California have passed Assembly Bill 660, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

This new law starts in July 2026 and standardizes the dates on food.

The new labels can either say “Best if used by” to share the best quality date of a product, or “use by” which states the safest day to consume the product.

The bill was introduced to stop waste and keep companies from convincing its consumers to purchase their products more often.
