GI Nurses & Associates Week always feels a little personal to me.

Having spent so much time in surgical services, I have seen how much expertise and coordination is required to keep GI services running safely and efficiently.

GI is one of those specialties that people don’t always fully understand. The pace can shift in an instant. The cases can be routine one moment and high-risk the next. The GI team shows up daily with skill and adaptability.

What stands out most is the teamwork. From pre-procedure to intra-op to scope reprocessing to recovery, it’s a seamless collaboration that is built on experience, trust, and constant attention to detail.

Your dedication keeps GI thriving and our patients flourishing. Here’s to continuing to grow together! 🌿

Just reflecting on the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) Annual Forum in Orlando this past week. I am still processing it.

It was completely jam-packed. So many incredible speakers and so much knowledge shared. I left feeling both inspired and in awe of the work being done across the legal nurse community.

My favorite part was finally meeting so many of you I’ve connected with on LinkedIn—in real life. Those conversations are always even better in person.

Feeling grateful to be part of this profession and already looking forward to **AALNC Annual Forum 2027 in San Francisco.

Happy Perianesthesia Nurse Awareness Week! 🎉

Perianesthesia nurses see the patient before patients roll back to the OR. They are busy easing nerves, answering last-minute questions, and setting the tone.

And then they are right there waiting when we are finished, ready to take over when the patient in the most vulnerable state.

There is a huge sense of relief knowing that OR nurses and anesthesiologists are giving report to someone who already understands:

• what we just did
• what could go wrong
• what to watch for in the next 5 minutes, 30 minutes, and hour
• how to manage pain, airways, and vitals

It’s this teamwork between pre-op, intra-op, and post-op that keeps patients safe. No gaps. No dropped balls. Just nurses watching out for patients every step of the way.

Thank you to our perianesthesia nursing colleagues for being the bookends of the surgical experience and the teammates we’re always grateful to work alongside.💙

✨ Happy Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Week! ✨

CRNAs are uniquely qualified because their path to anesthesia care is built on some of the most rigorous clinical training in nursing. Most CRNAs come from intensive care units, where they care for the sickest patients, manage life-sustaining therapies, and make critical decisions every day.

This combination of critical care nursing experience and anesthesia education is what makes CRNAs exceptional. They bring not only technical expertise, but also a nursing lens grounded in patient advocacy, safety, and compassion. That caring touch continues to define their practice in every procedural setting.

Thank you to all CRNAs for the dedication, preparation, and excellence you bring to patient care.

👏 Happy CRNA Week! 👏

As a nursing leader turned legal nurse consultant, this quote feels especially relevant in healthcare.

Nurses often see inequities first.

A missed assessment.

A delayed intervention.

A policy that looks good on paper but fails patients in practice or does not align with the Nurse Practice Act.

These moments may appear isolated, but they rarely are.

Over time, patterns emerge.

This is where the role of a legal nurse consultant becomes critical.

Legal nurse consultants bring clinical judgment, nursing experience, and an understanding of healthcare systems to legal analysis. The work isn’t about blame. It’s about context.

Leadership in nursing teaches you to advocate in the moment. Legal nurse consulting extends that advocacy beyond the bedside.

Legal nurse consultants bring clinical context to legal questions.

We connect standards of care to real-world practice.

We help ensure that facts shape outcomes.

Because injustice in care doesn’t exist in isolation.

And when it’s ignored, it doesn’t stay contained.

It ripples—affecting patients, professionals, and outcomes long after the event itself.

I recently saw a comic depicting a surgeon in the operating room reading “Surgery for Dummies” mid-case. It’s clearly meant to be humorous—but it also serves as a metaphor for something far more serious.

From a legal nurse consultant perspective, that image immediately brings credentialing and privileging to mind.

Credentialing is the process of verifying a physician’s education, training, licensure, experience, and competency.

Privileging defines the specific procedures and clinical activities a physician is authorized to perform based on that verified training and demonstrated competence.

Credentialing and privileging exist precisely to ensure that surgeons have the appropriate education, training, experience, and competency before they are allowed to perform specific procedures.

In case merit reviews, issues with credentialing and privileging often surface quietly but carry significant weight. When a surgeon is functioning outside of documented scope, performing procedures without verified training, or granted privileges without thorough review, patient outcomes can be significantly impacted.

That comic may get a laugh, but it also underscores a truth: patient safety begins long before the OR doors open. When credentialing and privileging are done right, there should never be a question about whether the person holding the scalpel is fully prepared.

Have you seen credentialing or privileging gaps surface in the cases you review?

While many people are flooded with , I prefer to start the year by reframing what I want professionally.

This year, I intentionally stepped away from LinkedIn during the holidays and focused on time with family and friends. That pause was a meaningful reset. Creating space away from constant updates and notifications allowed me to come back into the new year with a clearer mindset—and a renewed sense of purpose.

Rather than resolutions, I focus on intentional professional goals:

• Clarifying where my clinical expertise brings the most value

• Strengthening relationships with attorneys and fellow legal nurse consultants

• Refining workflows that enhance

• Setting achievable milestones that support sustainable growth

Progress comes from planning, consistency, and reflection. Taking time to reset makes that reflection possible—and far more productive.

If you gave yourself space over the holidays, what clarity did it bring as you head into the new year?

While this cartoon is funny at first glance, but it illustrates an important reality: anesthesia is not one-size-fits-all.

As someone who has spent over 15 years in the operating room, I can tell you that anesthesia care must be highly individualized. Every patient brings their own medical history, physiology, and risk factors to the table — and ignoring those differences can have real consequences.

🔹 Statistics tell the story:

One study found that accidental awareness under general anesthesia (AAGA) occurs in roughly 1 to 2 cases per 1,000 anesthetics. While rare, its psychological toll can be profound, leading to post-traumatic stress disorder in up to 70% of patients who experience it.

Patients with sleep apnea are at 2 to 3 times higher risk of complications from sedatives and narcotics if anesthesia isn’t carefully adjusted.

Poor anesthesia management doesn’t just impact the intraoperative phase. It’s linked to delayed recovery times, longer hospital stays, and increased risk of readmission.

When I review cases for attorneys, I focus on whether the anesthetic plan accounted for these critical variables:
✔️ Past medical history (e.g., cardiac or pulmonary disease)
✔️ Medications and drug interactions
✔️ Body mass index and airway considerations
✔️ Psychological risk factors (such as high pre-op anxiety)
✔️ Pain tolerance and prior anesthesia experiences

Anesthesia that’s thoughtfully tailored can mean the difference between a smooth recovery and a devastating outcome.

If your case involves a surgical patient, I can help you cut through the complexity. I’m only a phone call, text, or email away.

As a Legal Nurse Consultant specializing in surgical cases, I help attorneys navigate medical records and strengthen their cases. I support litigation by facilitating:

🔎 Medical Record Review
Surgical cases often hinge on the intraoperative record—detailed, technical, and at times overwhelming. With over 15 years of perioperative nursing experience, I know how to interpret these records and identify the key details that matter most.

🗂 Chronological Summaries & Reports
Attorneys often receive hundreds (or thousands) of pages of medical records. I create timelines and “play by play” summaries that turn complicated documentation into clear, actionable narratives.

⚖️ Expert Witness Testimony
In depositions and at trial, I draw on both hands-on OR nursing experience and advanced education to explain medical jargon and nursing responsibilities in terms jurors can easily understand.

If your case involves a surgical patient, I’m only a phone call, text, or email away.

A big thank you to AORN Los Angeles Chapter for hosting such an amazing patient safety seminar! 👏 The speakers were excellent, and the range of topics was both timely and thought-provoking. I highly recommend attending if you get the opportunity—it’s well worth it (and there are excellent t-shirts and totes!). Already looking forward to 2026!

This week we celebrate 🎉—and I can’t think of a more deserving group.

Surgical techs are the ultimate multitaskers of the OR. They’re ten steps ahead, anticipating instruments before the surgeon even asks, and always ready with Plan B (and C) when things don’t go as planned. They stand for hours on end without a break, ensuring the case moving seamlessly.

It is so impressive how effortlessly they sync with circulating nurses to form a dynamic team. It’s like a well-choreographed dance.

To every surgical tech I’ve had the privilege of working with: thank you for your skill, stamina, and dedication. 💙

👏 If you’ve worked with an amazing surgical tech, drop a thank-you below!

It’s been a while since I’ve introduced myself here, so here we go. 👋

My clinical foundation is rooted in perioperative services, where I’ve spent the past 15 years. I started my career as a circulating and scrub nurse, later stepping into progressive leadership roles, and today I take on interim leadership assignments. These experiences have allowed me to blend clinical expertise with hospital administration, regulatory compliance, and patient safety.

Before nursing school, I worked in healthcare consulting, which gave me a strong business lens early in my career. With two bachelor’s degrees, two master’s degrees, and a doctorate in leadership & learning, I’ve been fortunate to bridge both nursing and healthcare administration. I often joke that I’m a bit of a unicorn, but it’s this combined background that gives me a unique perspective in medico-legal work.

For the past 5 years, I’ve been working as a Legal Nurse Consultant, providing expertise to attorneys on cases related to surgical services—including pre-anesthesia, pre-op, intra-op, post-op, sterile processing, GI, and minor procedure units. I’ve consulted on cases across 15 states (and counting!) for both plaintiff and defense.

What also sets me apart is the experience I gain from my interim leadership roles—seeing how different types of hospitals (academic, community, teaching, tertiary) provide care. These experiences make me adaptable and well-rounded when evaluating standards of care.

Most of all—I love being a Legal Nurse Consultant. There’s nothing more rewarding than combing through medical records and finding that “needle in the haystack” that makes a difference for attorneys and their clients.

In my spare time, I love to travel the world and seek out remote destinations for hiking. When I’m home in Los Angeles, I enjoy spending time with our family dog, Auggie—an excellent companion when I’m working from home (though he admittedly sleeps too much on the job!).
