Members of the Japanese American legal community—especially those in the South and Southeast—are invited to attend the Nashville Bar Association’s 2026 Diversity Summit, The Next Chapter: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in a Changing Legal Landscape, on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Nashville School of Law.

This year’s featured keynote speaker is Dr. Karen Korematsu, President of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute and daughter of civil rights icon Fred Korematsu.

Dr. Korematsu has dedicated her career to preserving her father’s legacy and educating audiences across the country about Japanese American incarceration, constitutional rights, civil liberties, and the continuing relevance of Korematsu to the rule of law today. She has spoken before law schools, courts, judicial conferences, and national legal organizations, and in 2015 became the first non-lawyer member of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.

Her appearance in Nashville has particular significance for the South. Japanese American incarceration is often remembered as a West Coast story, but the South has its own direct connection to this history: thousands of Japanese Americans were also incarcerated at Rohwer and Jerome in Arkansas.

Bringing Dr. Korematsu to Tennessee offers lawyers in the region a rare opportunity to engage with that history—and with the constitutional questions it continues to raise—close to the places where part of that history actually occurred.

The full-day Summit will also feature Abby Rubenfeld (Obergefell v. Hodges), Judge Bernice Donald (6th Cir.), Judge Shelia Calloway, and other distinguished lawyers, judges, academics, and civic leaders, with programming on DEI under government scrutiny and political pressures, diversity in dispute resolution, AI and diversity, and more. Registration is $99 and includes 6.0 hours of TN CLE credit.
