Highly-skilled immigrants have been, and will continue to be, an invaluable asset to the U.S. healthcare system. Their contributions range from direct patient care in rural and urban settings to cutting-edge medical research. As America grapples with healthcare worker shortages and an aging population, the continued inclusion and recruitment of foreign-born healthcare professionals will be essential to the resilience and effectiveness of the U.S. healthcare system.

Congratulations to Kareem Mortimer on his O-1B approval. Hailing from the Bahamas, Kareem is a renowned filmmaker acclaimed for his sensitive storytelling and keen focus on socially pertinent themes. Through his films, he explores the intricacies of identity, sexuality, and the human experience, often shedding light on the untold struggles of immigrants and their unique narratives.

Launching his career in the mid-2000s, Mortimer's short films and documentaries swiftly garnered acclaim on the international festival circuit. His inaugural short film, "Float" (2007), broke barriers by initiating a much-needed dialogue about homophobia within the Caribbean, a theme that resonates strongly with many marginalized immigrants.

2010 saw the release of Mortimer's feature narrative debut film, "Children of God." It was lauded for its audacious exploration of homophobia in the Bahamas through the interwoven stories of three characters, presenting an emblematic narrative of the trials and triumphs often associated with the immigrant experience. The film found its home in more than 75 festivals globally, earning numerous accolades.

Mortimer's repertoire also includes the powerfully moving documentary "I Am Not A Dummy" (2008), celebrating the powerful life of quadriplegic writer Michael Wells. His 2017 feature film, "Cargo," is recognized as the most ambitious Bahamian film to date, taking on the heart-wrenching issue of human smuggling, a dark underbelly of the immigration process.

Beyond his cinematic contributions, Mortimer is a stalwart advocate for human rights. He wields his platform to challenge societal norms and raise consciousness about critical issues, providing a voice for underrepresented communities, including immigrants who frequently grapple with layers of oppression and prejudice. In every sense, Mortimer is not just a filmmaker, but a storyteller for the unheard, spotlighting stories that echo from the depths of the human experience.

Since 1985 the Sundance Film Festival has screened 72 films by Indian filmmakers for competition - two of these selections have belonged to Reema Sengupta. Reema, is a master storyteller, international award-winning writer-director, and Founder-Director of the eclectic Mumbai-based production house, CATNIP. Her first work, the short film "Counterfeit Kunkoo," premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and has since been a part of 120 international festivals, winning 40 awards along the way.

This year, Reema returned to Sundance with "Nocturnal Burger," a short film that delves into larger perspectives of trauma and resilience over the course of one night at a dysfunctional local police station in Mumbai.

Reema's expertise extends beyond her award-winning film work, as she has directed and written over 250 videos for a range of artists and brands. She has worked with renowned musicians such as Skrillex, Steve Aoki, Above & Beyond, Nucleya, and Prateek Kuhad, as well as brands such as Netflix, Uber, Jeep, Tissot, and more. Her contributions to women's empowerment through cinema have earned her recognition as a two-time TEDx speaker and a feature in the Hindustan Times' "30 Under 30" list. And now, she can add an O-1 visa to her list of accolades :)
