A confidential settlement was recently reached in our hard-fought case against a local school district. The school and teacher habitually used improper restraint and seclusion to discipline and punish our client, a 10 year old African American boy with disabilities. We uncovered that the teacher deliberately ignored known triggers of our client's behavioral issues, and refused to read the student's records, to learn that the type of restraint and seclusion used was contra-indicated for this student. No child should go through this dehumanizing and cruel experience.

In 1998, teachers in West Virginia strapped a 4-year-old autistic girl with cerebral palsy to a wooden chair. Why? She was being “uncooperative” because she needed to use the bathroom. The girl suffered bruises and was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. In 2003, school officials...

Appeal from the district court's judgment, entered following a jury verdict, in a 42 U.S.C. § 1983 action alleging that Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dep...

We are proud to announce that one of our cases, Catalan vs. City of Los Angeles, has been profiled in the outstanding 40 minute Netflix documentary Long Shot by LaMendola

Juan Catalan was exonerated of murder charges thanks to footage coincidentally taken during a taping of Curb Your Enthusiasm during a Los Angeles Dodgers game. Following the conclusion of the criminal case featured in the documentary, we handled Mr. Catalan’s civil suit against the Los Angeles Police Department, securing justice in the form of both a monetary settlement and corrective action against the officers who wrongly arrested him.

The documentary shows excerpts of depositions of detectives Pinner and Rodriguez, both conducted by Gary Casselman during the civil case.

Watch the documentary here:

When Juan Catalan is arrested for a murder he didn't commit, he builds his case for innocence around raw footage from a popular TV show. A documentary.

The practice of summoning police to inner city schools to discipline pupils, some as early as 7 years old, including children with learning or emotional disabilities, must be stopped. Minority children exhibiting symptoms of their disabilities are being criminalized in disproportionate numbers. The Los Angeles Times recently featured an article about this growing, deplorable practice.

Casselman Law is happy to announce two settlements against two different local School Districts. Our cases involved handcuffing of a second grader on multiple occasions, and an unlawful search and seizures of a minor with disabilities. We are committing our resources and expertise to help victimized children and their families fight back until School Districts realize this practice is very costly. Our clients are delighted with our success and we are very pleased with the results obtained.
