Congratulations to Justice Cindy Pánuco, confirmed today as Associate Justice of the Second Appellate District, Division Three.

On September 18, Governor Gavin Newsom announced her nomination. Today, she and her fellow appointees were confirmed by unanimous vote of a commission chaired by California Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero, alongside Attorney General Rob Bonta and Presiding Justice Frances Rothschild.

Cindy is one of us. She served as Directing Attorney of our Consumer Rights and Economic Justice team and later as Vice President and Chief Programs Officer, fighting alongside our clients and shaping the organization we are today.

Have you experienced discrimination or harassment at school? You have options.

Since 1972, Title IX has protected students from s*x discrimination, harassment, and s*xual violence in schools. On September 28, the federal government rolled back key protections from the 2024 rule, incl. safeguards for LGBTQ+ students and survivors of s*xual misconduct.

Every student deserves a safe learning environment. Public Counsel’s Education Equity Project offers free legal services to eligible K-12 and college students in Southern California, including Title IX advocacy.

A’kia Benbo, owner of HoneyQween Juice Bar, shared her experience being pushed out of her brick-and-mortar location and why stronger commercial tenant protections are needed.

For small business owners, signing a commercial lease can come with risks that aren’t always visible until it’s too late. From unexpected building code issues to disputes with landlords, tenants can face significant costs and uncertainty while trying to keep their businesses open.

And finding legal help isn’t always easy.

Public Counsel is proud to celebrate our President and CEO, Kathryn Eidmann, who has been named a 2026 Leader of Influence in Nonprofit & Philanthropy by the Los Angeles Business Journal.

The recognition honors nonprofit leaders across Los Angeles County whose leadership is helping meet the needs of the region’s diverse communities and making a meaningful difference in the lives of Angelenos.

Kathryn has spent more than a decade at Public Counsel, first as a litigator and later as a leader overseeing our litigation and legal programs. Throughout her career, she has worked across issues including education equity, children’s rights, gender discrimination, immigrants’ rights, housing and homelessness, and protections for low-wage workers.

As President and CEO, Kathryn continues to lead Public Counsel’s work to advance justice and protect the rights of communities across Los Angeles and California.

We’re proud to see Kathryn recognized alongside an incredible group of nonprofit and philanthropic leaders, including former Public Counsel Board Chair Stacy D. Phillips.
