📣 Let’s stand up for small businesses!

Today , .hutt and introduced a motion to create a Commercial Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance for the City of Los Angeles!

Many small businesses face harassment from their landlords, and it’s pushing the businesses we rely on OUT of our neighborhoods.

This is an important step forward to protect our communities and the local shops and entrepreneurs at the heart of our city.

🤔 What if a lender charged 300%+ interest on a small loan? In California, that can still happen.

That’s why Dolores Huerta is speaking out in support of , a common-sense bill to cap payday loan interest rates at 36% and help end the debt trap hurting working families across California.

Authored by and .

Here’s what this bill does, plain and simple:
✔️ Caps sky-high interest rates on payday and small-dollar loans under $2,500
✔️ Helps stop borrowers from getting trapped in cycles of repeat debt
✔️ Aligns California with protections already in place for military servicemembers and in 21+ other states

When people are struggling to cover rent, groceries, or medical costs, they should not be pushed deeper into crisis by predatory lending. AB 2558 is about fairness, dignity, and protecting Californians from exploitation.

🎥 Watch Dolores Huerta’s message.
📣 Help AB2558 build momentum ahead of April 23 hearing.

➡️ “Frankly, being able to see what the problem is is key and central to being able to fix the problem,” said Tara Ford, Senior Counsel at Public Counsel.

Yesterday’s feature highlights ongoing efforts to reform New Mexico’s foster care system following a landmark settlement in Kevin S. v. Blalock.

While progress has been made—including improved access to medical care and steps toward more trauma-responsive services—Public Counsel will continue pushing for meaningful, systemic change.

This case reflects the importance of accountability, transparency, and sustained advocacy to ensure that children in foster care (especially those with disabilities) receive the care they deserve.

⚖️ A federal court blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to dismantle decades-old protections for immigrant children.

The administration sought to end a 1985 court order that ensures children in government custody are informed of their rights and can speak with a parent, relative, or attorney before making life-altering decisions about their future.

The court rejected that effort and found the government’s replacement policy to be coercive and unconstitutional-putting children at risk of being pressured into giving up their rights without support!

At Public Counsel, protecting children, youth, and families is at the core of our work. We remain unwavering in our commitment to ensure every child is treated with dignity and has access to the protections they are entitled to under the law.

We’re grateful to stand alongside our co-counsel in this fight: NILC, Gilbert Carrasco, Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll, and Quinn Emanuel.
