A fiery multi-vehicle crash involving a big rig snarled traffic on northbound Interstate 5 north of Stockton early Wednesday morning.

The crash was reported around 5:34 a.m. near the Highway 12 off-ramp in San Joaquin County. According to the California Highway Patrol, four vehicles were involved. KCRA 3 crews at the scene saw a burned big rig, a damaged pickup truck, and three other burned-out vehicles.

Everyone involved was able to walk away, with minor injuries at most.

A SigAlert was issued, and Caltrans’ traffic map showed congestion stretching from Highway 12 to Hammer Lane. All lanes have since reopened.

The cause has not been confirmed. A CHP officer at the scene said it may have involved a lane change. The big rig driver, who was hauling mail, told KCRA 3 that a vehicle ahead of him moved into the left lane and he could not stop in time, causing the truck to slide off the road. He said he got out and helped others exit their vehicles before the fire spread.

Crashes involving large trucks can unfold in seconds. Leaving extra space and avoiding sudden lane changes near big rigs can make a real difference on busy highways.

A Wednesday morning crash involving a semi-truck on the northbound 5 Freeway in Sun Valley has left one person dead and another injured.

It happened around 11 a.m. near Sheldon Street. Video from Citizen shows a pickup truck ending up underneath the back of the semi’s trailer. Sky5 was over the scene shortly after noon and showed a white truck stopped in the roadway behind the semi with severe front-end damage. Another vehicle was stopped nearby.

Firefighters tried to free the driver of the white truck but determined the driver could not be saved. One other person suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

All northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway were shut down, and drivers were directed off the freeway at Sheldon Street. Traffic reportedly backed up for several miles.

Initial reports have not shared what caused the crash. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.

Collisions involving large trucks can be especially dangerous because of the difference in size and weight between vehicles. Leaving extra space and staying alert in slowing traffic are simple ways to reduce risk on busy LA freeways.

The end of the line for Route 66 could soon look very different. 🛣️

For decades, Mel’s Drive-In at Lincoln and Olympic boulevards in Santa Monica has marked the western terminus of the 2,400-mile highway. Designed by Armet & Davis, the 1959 building is known for its slanted roof and oversize windows, hallmarks of Googie architecture. It operated as the Penguin Coffee Shop from 1959 through 1991, and Mel’s arrived in 2016 with a renovation meant to restore the 1950s atmosphere.

Now, owner ValueRock Realty has filed a preliminary application to replace it with an eight-story building featuring 138 apartments, 123 parking spaces, and first-floor retail. The Santa Monica Conservancy and the Los Angeles Conservancy have nominated the site for landmark status, which could protect it from demolition. Preservationists say housing and historic preservation can coexist.

The Santa Monica Landmarks Commission will hold a hearing on December 14. If landmark status is granted, the owner can appeal to the City Council. In the meantime, the restaurant remains open, and its manager says the lease runs through 2029.
