An open alcoholic beverage in the passenger area can still get the vehicle's driver cited.

It doesn't matter that your passenger is the one holding it.

California treats an open container in the vehicle seriously, whether you're leaving a car meet, cruising to dinner, or waiting in traffic.

If it's open, keep it out of the passenger compartment and don't let a casual ride turn into a stop.

P.S. Did a traffic stop turn into an alcohol-related citation?

You need to understand what you're facing.

When you see an emergency vehicle, tow truck, or Caltrans vehicle stopped with flashing lights, don't fly past it in the next lane like nothing's happening.

California's Move Over law requires drivers to change lanes away from the scene when it's safe.

If there's no lane to move into, you're expected to slow down.

It's about protecting the people working inches away from freeway traffic.

P.S. Cited on the freeway and want someone to review what happened?

Red lighting belongs on the back of your car.

California law restricts red lights that are visible from the front because they can confuse other drivers and emergency vehicles.

That means your red grille lights, red halos, or forward-facing red LED accents can draw attention for all the wrong reasons.

It might look good at a meet, but it can turn into a citation the second you roll onto the street.

P.S. Got cited for lights or another equipment issue?

Don't let a simple mod turn into a bigger headache.

Cannabis is legal in California.

An open package in the cabin while you're driving isn't.

California law doesn't allow an open cannabis container or package while driving or riding in the passenger compartment.

It also doesn't allow smoking or ingesting cannabis while you're driving or riding in that compartment.

That's Health and Safety Code 11362.3.

Legal doesn't mean there aren't rules around the car.

P.S. Got a cannabis-related traffic charge or citation?

Your off-road lights can look tough...

But the street has different rules.

California lets you equip up to eight lamps for use as headlamps off the highway.

Once you're on a highway, those auxiliary lights have to be off and covered or hooded with an opaque cover.

That's CVC 24411.

Trail setup? Cool.

Street setup? Cover them before you leave.

P.S. Got stopped over your lighting setup?

Bald tires aren't just a bad idea in the rain.

There's a legal line too.

For most passenger-vehicle tires, California says you can't use a tire on the highway when it has less than 1/32 inch of tread depth in any two adjacent grooves.

That's CVC 27465.

Different rules can apply for certain commercial and snow-tire situations.

If you're checking your tire setup before canyon runs or a wet-season commute, tread should be on the list.

P.S. Got cited over an equipment issue?

On a tight canyon road, three feet can feel like a lot.

But it isn't optional.

California's Three Feet for Safety Act says you can't pass a cyclist with less than three feet between your car and the rider.

If there isn't enough room, slow down and wait until it's safe. That's CVC 21760.

The rule is simple.

The road conditions aren't always simple.

Don't force the pass.

Aggressive fitment looks good until the tread is sitting outside the body with nothing covering it.

California's fender rule says your setup has to minimize spray or splash to the rear, and the body, fender, cover, flap, or attachment has to be at least as wide as the tire tread.

That's CVC 27600.

Every build is different, but if your tread is hanging out past everything, you're giving someone an equipment issue to talk about.

P.S. Got pulled over over your wheels, tires, or stance?
