Bet Tzedek Volunteers for Justice Page

Bet Tzedek Volunteers for Justice Page Bet Tzedek's Volunteers for Justice is a space for current and former Bet Tzedek interns, externs, an At Bet Tzedek, we believe we have a calling. Real justice.

It’s not just a purpose—certainly not just a job. It’s a passion. You could say it began thousands of years ago in the words of a core principle of Jewish law:

Tzedek, tzedek tirdof. It means “Justice, justice you shall pursue.”

We take it to mean that our duty in life is to relentlessly pursue justice. Equal justice. And for the poor, the disadvantaged, the sick and the elderly, justice is far

too often something that doesn’t belong to them. It’s just a word on a page somewhere. So Bet Tzedek, the House of Justice, steps in to give them an equal voice, a fair shot. So far we’ve helped over 100,000 families - regardless of racial, religious, or ethnic background – overcome abuse, neglect and exploitation. For free. But we are just getting started. Our goal is to stand on the platform of our democracy and our laws to be a driving force of change in the way we all treat our fellow citizens. We do it every day, for one person at a time.

Tenacity and persistence. That is what Grace Lee and Adam Malatesta, volunteer attorneys with Latham & Watkins LLP, exhibited when they worked with their Holocaust survivor client for nearly three years to ensure she was granted the reparations payments she is entitled to. We thank you and the rest of your colleagues for your dedication to the survivor community.

Bet Tzedek's first in-house Advance Planning Clinic designed to help prepare Advance Health Care Directives and Statutory Wills for low-income clients was a great success thanks to the help of volunteers such as attorney Anna Tarasyuk. Read her blog entry here! If you are interested in getting involved, email us at [email protected]

We always emphasize the importance of planning, and especially the importance of having the essentials. Advance life planning is, unfortunately, an issue that tends to get brushed aside, often with devastating results. If ignored, planning can become a drawn-out nightmare,…
