Sixteen years after her summer fellowship at the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law, Nicole N. King has come full circle, now serving as Board President and helping guide the organization’s future.

Featured in a new profile by USC Gould School of Law, the piece follows her path from Trope and Trope Fellow to trial attorney at Venable LLP, and reflects on how early hands-on legal advocacy shaped her commitment to access to justice.

On Denim Day and throughout Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we stand with survivors and reject the myths and victim-blaming that too often surround sexual violence. We call on our communities to uplift survivors, deepen awareness, and strengthen our collective response by expanding access to safety and justice.

Pictured are some of our staff members and volunteers wearing denim in solidarity today.

At the Buhai Center, we work with clients to help build safer, more stable futures for themselves and their children. Earth Day is a reminder that we all play a role in protecting that future— by caring for the environment and the communities it sustains.

As Women’s History Month comes to a close, we are reflecting with gratitude on the women who make the Buhai Center what it is. Our board members, staff, donors, volunteers, and clients—you are the heart of this work. Every day, you carry forward a mission rooted in dignity, empowerment, and service, helping ensure meaningful access to justice for those who need it most. Thank you.

We also hold special gratitude for Harriett Buhai (1916–1983). A trailblazing family law specialist, she dedicated her career to providing pro bono legal assistance to individuals in Los Angeles and expanding access to justice for low-income women. After her passing, colleagues at the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles proposed renaming the Family Law Project in her honor, establishing what is now the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law. As Judge Isabel R. Cohen (Ret.) reflected, Harriett used her legal talents and “gave them away free, without reward except that which comes inwardly to a person of values who does right in disregard of popular opinion and public appeal.” We are proud to continue that legacy.

The Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law is proud to be the beneficiary of Reformation’s latest campaign, featuring Laura Wasser, a longtime supporter of the Buhai Center.

Reformation’s “Divorce Collection” centers women’s empowerment and choice in leaving a relationship. The collection includes a limited-edition sweatshirt that directs 100% of its net proceeds to the Buhai Center, supporting our work providing free family law services to low-income individuals navigating divorce and other complex family law issues, most of whom are women facing domestic violence.

We are grateful to Laura and Reformation for this impactful partnership, which has already seen extraordinary engagement. This collaboration helps advance our mission to expand access to justice in the family law courts while underscoring the critical role of legal representation during a challenging—and sometimes dangerous—life transition for our clients.

The Buhai Center proudly celebrates the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc., our co-founders and steadfast partners in advancing justice in the family law courts.

From the Buhai Center’s beginnings as a 100% volunteer-run organization providing domestic violence restraining orders, to the nationally recognized champion for family law justice it is today, BWL members have dedicated countless hours and resources, shaping our history and guiding our mission.

Thank you, BWL. Your vision, dedication, and leadership have made the Buhai Center possible. We look forward to continuing this legacy together.
