Some employees need time away from work after a reproductive loss, and California law recognizes protected leave in certain situations.

A worker should not have to explain private medical pain just to avoid being labeled unreliable.

Returning to work after giving birth should not mean being sent to a restroom to express milk.

California law expects employers to provide appropriate lactation accommodation, including a private space that is not a bathroom.

A background check should not become an automatic rejection without the process required by California law.

In California, many employers cannot ask about criminal history before a conditional job offer. After an offer, they may run a background check, but they usually cannot reject you automatically without following the Fair Chance Act process.

A firing can sound neutral on paper.

But if it happened right after you reported harassment, discussed wages, requested medical leave, reported an injury, or complained about unpaid time, the timing may matter.

A strong HR complaint is not a long rant. It is a clear record.

Start with the main issue. Say what happened, when it happened, who was involved, and what you are reporting: harassment, discrimination, retaliation, unpaid wages, missed breaks, or unsafe conditions.

Email is usually best because it creates a paper trail. After a phone call or meeting, send a short follow-up confirming what you reported.

Keep copies of your complaint, HR replies, schedules, pay records, and follow-ups. Avoid forwarding confidential company, patient, customer, or coworker information to a personal email.

Time clock rounding is not automatically illegal in California.

But a rounding policy should not be used to shave time from employees’ pay. If the system keeps rounding in the employer’s favor, or workers are regularly paid for less time than they actually worked, that can become a wage issue.

Meal breaks are even stricter. Employers should not round meal-period punches to make a late, short, or interrupted break look compliant.

A job requirement should not quietly come out of an employee’s pocket.

When workers are expected to cover required expenses for the company, the issue can spread across a whole department, route, store, or crew.

“Five days or 40 hours, whichever is more” does not mean the same thing for every employee.

If you usually work 10-hour shifts, five sick days can mean 50 hours of paid sick leave.

If you usually work 6-hour shifts, using five sick days would total 30 hours, which means you may still have 10 hours left.

These examples assume you already earned the leave or your employer gave you the full amount.

If you’re denied sick leave or punished for using it, we’re here to defend you.
