Civil rights trial lawyer and Founder of the Equal Rights Law Group, Mika Hilaire, was featured on the cover of the 2/15/21 San Fernando Valley Business Journal as part of its Black Entrepreneurs Month special issue, a great honor.

When asked what advice she would give someone starting their own business, Mika Hilaire told the Business Journal, "From a fiscal standpoint, being conservative with cash flow and overhead is critical. Also, spending adequate time researching the legal requirements and licensing laws is paramount. Finally, have plans and goals clearly written out and articulated as to how your business will grow. Make sure you have a mentor within your field so you can bounce ideas or ask questions."

Civil rights trial lawyer and Founder of the Equal Rights Law Group, Mika Hilaire, will be co-counseling a civil suit against the University of New Mexico and the NCAA, along with renowned national civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump, and Texas trial lawyer Bob Hillard.

Hilaire, Crump, Hillard, and the family of Nahje Flowers, a University of New Mexico football player who took his own life on November 5, 2019, will hold a virtual news conference on August 25 at 3 pm ET/1 pm MT.

A few days before 21-year-old Flowers’ death, he had seen a psychiatrist for depression and suicidal thoughts. He was prescribed antidepressants by the doctor and was instructed to sit out for at least two games. But his coach forced him to play the game, despite the health concerns. The next day, Flowers was found dead in his apartment from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The autopsy indicated his brain had signs of CTE. His death was the third UNM student athlete's death that year, raising many questions about the school’s athletics department and treatment of their student-athletes.

Mika Hilaire told the Business Journal, "The Equal Rights Law Group is kind of like my culmination of all of my 20 years of experience and really trying to establish myself as a civil rights lawyer, but really having my focus on employment discrimination cases. A lot of private companies have attorneys on retainer and so being someone who represents employees, it's important to also be someone who can share knowledge with employees."
