AB 832, which was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, is set to expire on September 30, 2021.
This allowed for tenants, who were unable to pay rent due to COVID-19 financial distress, pay 25% of their unpaid rent.
This begs the question, how can tenants protect themselves after the moratorium comes to an end? A few tips below.
If your landlord gives you a notice to “pay or quit,” you cannot be evicted if you return a Declaration of COVID-19 Related Financial Distress within 15 days of receiving the notice.
As included in AB 832, to be eligible for cleared rent debt, tenants must earn 80% or less of the area median income, which varies for each county within the state.
Until October 1, 2021, a landlord can only evict a tenant if they provide a legally valid reason.
