Before operating a golf cart in Horry County, it is important to understand South Carolina’s golf cart laws.
All golf carts must be properly registered with SCDMV and display a valid permit decal. Owners are also required to maintain liability insurance coverage.
Drivers must be at least 16 and possess a valid driver’s license; and children under 12 must wear a seatbelt on golf carts. Golf carts may only be operated on roads with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less and are generally restricted to daylight hours unless otherwise permitted by local ordinances.
Additionally, golf carts must remain within four miles of the owner’s residence or the entrance to their gated community. While golf carts may cross larger highways, they may do so only at designated intersections.
These laws are designed to promote safety for all motorists, pedestrians, and golf cart operators. Before heading out, be sure to review any local ordinances that may impose additional requirements.
