COLD WEATHER UPDATE: A strong cold front is expected this weekend, bringing freezing conditions to Seminole County. Now is the time to review the Five Ps of cold weather preparedness:

💧 Pipes: Cover exposed outdoor pipes, allow outdoor faucets to slowly drip, turn off and drain irrigation systems, and know where your main water shut-off is in case of an emergency.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 People: Dress in layers, wear a hat and gloves and stay dry and out of the wind.

🐕 Pets: Bring outdoor pets inside or provide warm shelter.

🌱 Plants: Cover or bring in sensitive plants

🔥 Practice Fire Safety: Use safe heating sources indoors. Do not use fuel-burning devices such as grills; they release carbon monoxide, which is a deadly gas. Additionally, make sure to use space heaters according to their instructions and be attentive to open flames. Make sure heaters are spaced three feet apart from flammable materials, such as blankets.

🌿 When planting a shrub:
🕳️ Dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball, but no deeper than the container it came in.
📏 Place the rootball 2.5 feet (30 inches) from the foundation — on center.
🌧️ This spacing helps the plant catch rainfall, 💨 improves airflow, and 🚫 prevents fungal diseases.

Can’t stand the heat? Stop complaining and do something about it. Plant a tree. Trees can cool streets up to 10°F, making hot days safer and more bearable from coast to coast.

Trees are one of the most affordable and effective tools to cool our cities, playgrounds, parks and overall towns. The cooling power of a healthy canopy can be especially important for people who spend a lot of time outside, playing, rely on public transportation, exercising, walking pets and more. Trees, help build community. But ultimately, help cool down temperatures and also help with flood prevention.
