“Take the Keys out of the Equation”

A message from the Springfield Police Department:

The holiday season including Thanksgiving Eve can be times for celebration where alcohol is involved. The Springfield Police Department wants you to “take the keys out of the equation.” You can’t drive home if you don’t have the keys to your car.

PLAN AHEAD:

Plan ahead, have a designated driver, a sober driver to pick you up or utilize a taxi or ride-sharing service. Too many times we have seen someone with the intention of getting a ride home, but instead they decide to drive their own car home. That’s why we’re asking you to leave your car home and “take the keys out of the equation.”

SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING:

If you are driving and see another person driving erratically, do not hesitate to call 911. We have officers out on the streets and we are looking for impaired drivers. The Springfield Police Department does not take any days off and are working on the holidays to protect you.

DRIVING IMPAIRED ISN’T WORTH IT:

The cost of a taxi or ride sharing service is worth it. An O.U.I. offense could cost you $5000 in court and legal fees. Plus, your insurance premium will rise, costing you more money each year. A refusal to use take a breathalyzer test will result in the immediate suspension of your license for at least 180 days.

KNOW YOUR “LEGAL” LIMIT:

Use common sense if you are drinking. Being drunk is a relative term. The legal limit is .08. Generally, that means 3 or 4 12 oz. beers in an hour or 4 or 5 12 oz. beers in two hours will push your BAC towards the legal limit if not over. For every alcoholic drink you have, it takes more than an hour for that alcohol to leave your system. Remember, your alcoholic drinks add up fast. Two tall glasses of beer equates to roughly four drinks. The amount of liquor in a drink also widely varies, as does the amount of wine poured in a glass. Alcohol content also varies, as some beers like IPA’s have much higher alcohol content and can push you towards that legal limit even faster. Know what you are drinking and know your own tolerance.

The Springfield Police Department urges you to stay safe on the roads and “take the keys out of the equation.”

This coming weekend, we will be setting our clock’s back an hour as Daylight Savings Time will be ending. It is also the time of year when leaves fall from the trees and typically, we start to see more rainfall and/or the start of snowfall.

It is important to keep in mind when operating a motor vehicle that the darkness combined with the weather conditions may require you to operate at a speed considerably less than the posted speed limit. When children are walking or riding their bicycles to school in the morning, it is often dark and the leaves on the road are often wet. This combination can result in your car skidding when attempting to stop at a crosswalk or for a crossing guard. Additionally, the possibility of skidding could result in a rear-end accident if you do not allow for sufficient time and distance to stop your vehicle. In the eyes of the law, a pedestrian has the right of way!

Recently, in Longmeadow, the safety officer lowered the posted speed limits at two schools to 10 MPH. This means, for most operators, you will have to travel with your foot on the brake as your car can idle at more than 10 MPH. Clearly, the reduced speed limit is an indication of the dangers of operating a vehicle near pedestrians, bicyclists and school aged children. For everyone’s safety, please operate your car with caution at all times.
