🐾 “Curb Your Dog” in Long Beach… but where exactly?
If you’ve walked around Long Beach lately, you’ve probably had that moment -
you look down and think: “Seriously? Right here?”
Let’s talk about it.
A lot of people don’t realize that many local dog waste rules on Long Island were written decades ago, when streets looked very different.
Back then:
-Fewer parked cars
-No bike lanes
-Less foot traffic
So the idea was: dogs should go “between the curb lines”,meaning the roadway, not sidewalks or planted areas.
Fast forward to today…that’s not always realistic or safe.
But here’s what hasn’t changed:
👉 If your dog goes, you clean it. Every time.
No gray area there.
And this isn’t just about stepping in something on the way to the beach.
Dog waste:
-washes into storm drains → and eventually into our waterways
-Carries bacteria that can affect beach water quality
-Damages trees, plants, and even metal infrastructure over time
So yeah, it’s a nuisance.
But it’s also a community issue.
The real problem? It’s not dogs, it’s inconsistency.
Most people do the right thing. But it only takes a few not to… and everyone notices.
A few simple ways to make a difference:
-Bring bags. Always. (Even on “quick” walks)
-Bring your dogs to the curb, not mid-sidewalk to relieve themselves
-Be mindful around tree beds, storefronts, and high-traffic areas
If it happens just handle it. No hesitation.
Long Beach is one of the most walkable, dog-friendly communities around.
And honestly, this is one of those things where: if everyone is just a little more aware, it fixes itself.
There’s also a bigger conversation worth having about whether older rules still match how the city functions today… but that starts with understanding what’s already in place.
