What Is the Cost of Paying Men More Than Women To Do Substantially The Same Job? $125 Million if You’re Sterling Jeweler

Sterling Jeweler, owner of the subsidiaries, Kay Jewelers and Zales, just announced on June 9, 2022 that it will shell out $125 million to a class of nearly 70,000 women to settle their claims of gender discrimination in pay and promotions, plus $50 million to cover their attorneys’ fees in the long running lawsuit.

The state of California’s minimum wage for large employers is currently $15 an hour and for employers with less than 26 workers, the minimum wage is $14 an hour.

In January 2023, minimum wage for all employers will increase to $15.50 an hour.

Wage theft is where an employer does not pay its employees for all hours worked. It is illegal in California and there are remedies for employees who are victims of this practice.

Wage theft can come in many forms, whether your employer requires you to show up to work early and set up before clocking in or requires you to clock out at the end of a shift and continue working. This sometimes happens in service sector jobs like car washes, restaurants, recycle centers and construction sites, to name a few.
