If your family relies on home- or community-based disability services, this is worth knowing.

The Olmstead ruling is still in place. What has changed is the DOJ’s approach to the guidance it has used in enforcing those rights. What that means in practice may depend a lot on how individual states respond.

We break down what changed, what didn’t and what families should watch for in our latest article.

Learn about how the U.S. Department of Justice will no longer use its Olmstead ruling guidance as a basis for enforcing disabilities rights.

This is exactly how we want families to feel when they work with us.

Special needs planning can seem overwhelming at first. Katie has a wonderful way of taking something complicated, walking families through it carefully and making sure they understand the choices in front of them.

Thank you, T.O., for sharing your experience and for recommending our team to others.

When you’re planning for a loved one’s future, it’s easy to focus on one decision at a time.

But where they may live, how they’ll get around, whether they’ll work and what kind of support they’ll need can all affect the legal planning too.

A good plan should reflect real life, not just what’s written in the documents. If you’re thinking through what adulthood could look like for your loved one, we can help make sure the legal pieces support the bigger picture.

Could saving too much money put someone’s SSI benefits at risk?

Yes. The SSI asset limit is still just $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.

That can make seemingly simple things like an emergency fund, tax refund, gift or inheritance more complicated than families realize.

Knowing the rules and understanding options like ABLE accounts and special needs trusts can help families plan ahead without unintentionally putting benefits at risk.

Learn more about how reforming the SSI asset limit could potentially combat poverty for families with loved ones with disabilities.

Recently we had a firm retreat which was led by Lori Pulvermaker at Atticus Lawyer Coaching.

Our team kicked things off by learning to cook a Greek meal at Marcel's Culinary Experience with Chef Molly Sell, before we dove into 2 days of workshops. By brainstorming and taking the time to work on internal processes, we will have more time to develop new planning ideas and serve our clients!

Thank you Lori, for your leadership and expertise! Sidenote: Our surprise chef from our cooking night was Chef Molly- who attended Maynooth University in Ireland during their sophomore year at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN.

Could your child apply for SSI or SSDI at age 18?

Don’t wait until the application to start thinking about the evidence Social Security may need.

Our friend Jeff Rabin, JD, explains the difference between SSI and SSDI, how Social Security determines disability, and why medical records can matter more than the diagnosis itself.

It’s a helpful read for families preparing for adulthood and future benefits.
