Dear Lincoln County VOTERS, we have until 8 pm on Tuesday, May 19th to get your ballots in to a drop off site. Which ever candidate receives 50% plus 1 vote or more will be your circuit judge! If I am fortunate to be elected I will be a fair judge, neutral when applying the law, with timely hearings according to ORS 1.050. I would be very honored to be your judge and ask for your Vote! Thank you, Russell Baldwin

Counting down.....to May 19, 2020! Thank you Lincoln County Voters!

Endorsement letter for Baldwin for Judge. A special message to women voters in particular! Thank you for your support!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Women VOTERS of Lincoln County,
As a "female voter", I am a strong proponent of diversity, and will often vote for a "female" candidate if I feel they are qualified. However, I would not do that when it comes to the circuit court judge race in Lincoln County. In this case, I would prioritize deep knowledge of the law, integrity, and a bone-deep commitment to upholding the law as demonstrated by judicial candidate Russell Baldwin, far more highly than concerns of gender, race, etc.
I am further troubled by Sheryl Bachart's own statement printed in the News Times on April 29, 2020, where she openly admits she has made many mistakes, and that those where she "mis-read" someone are the ones that keep her awake many nights. A person is presumed innocent unless proven guilty and should not be falsely incarcerated by a judge that may have "mis-read" them, or already had a previous bias, when there is no jury trial. That result is truly tragic and very damaging to individuals and their families for years to come.
Now, more than ever, we need to insure that our elected officials, including this judge race, be a person of utmost integrity who will honor their oath of office, be held accountable, and is highly educated and experienced in the law. We do NOT need people in public service who can be bought-and-sold to the highest bidder. I believe people are tired of this and want change for the better. My support is for Russ Baldwin who I believe will be the best choice for Lincoln County.
Sincerely,
Ashley Smith
My opinion of 3 important qualities for a judge beyond careful listening, neutral decisions based in law and integrity are:
1) Curiosity, because many but not all controversies are complex.
2) Patience, for the same reason, complexity.
3) Clarity, with the patience to write efficiently to convey a legal result in a neutral way.
(Facts should not be colored with adverbs and adjectives to arrive at a particular result. Facts more often than not speak for themselves when stated blandly, and it is easier for the reader to understand how the law has been applied to those facts when they aren't colored through a lens).
I have been privileged to practice before judges with these qualities in prestigious amounts, but I regret to say that it has been my somewhat recent experience that we have fewer such persons on the bench with these qualities--I say again-- curiosity, patience and clarity. The willingness and desire to solve complex human problems efficiently, not necessarily quickly, but timely and within the confines of ORS 1.050 (no matter submitted for decision shall take more than 60 days absent extraordinary circumstances or health issues).
I promise that I will prominently post a copy of ORS 1.050 in the courtroom where I appear, along with a copy of my signed oath of office. I previously promised that I would follow ORS 1.050 if I served on the bench. I had been asked this by a representative from the governor's office during my interview for a judicial position. Incidentally, I was listed as a "highly qualified" candidate for that judicial position.
