As a “service provider,” there’s a comment I hear occasionally that utterly baffles me:
“Thank you for speaking with me for a bit, even though you couldn’t help me. Other law offices just say, ‘We don’t do that,’ and hang up.”
Just because we can’t help someone with a particular problem today doesn’t mean we won’t be able to help them in the future.
And even when we can’t help, we can usually take a few minutes to explain why, point them in the right direction, and/or refer them to someone who can.
It costs very little to be helpful. And people remember how you treated them.
