Darrell's favorite part was the car ride - he didn't want to get out!

Sweety went on a hiking adventure with one of our volunteers!

Our volunteer says:

"Sweety says she is more of a city girl. We had to turn around twice because she didn't want to walk through mud puddles and every now and again she'd look back at me as if she was saying "this can't possibly be the trail..?" I absolutely love her and her cute little pouty face 💕"

Interest in meeting Sweety? Stop by the shelter today! We are open 11am-6pm for adoptions!

Dolly and Ollie are inseparable best friends who arrived at the shelter heartbroken after their owner passed away. Life has turned upside down for them, but they're navigating the changes with courage.

Ollie, in turn, sticks close to Dolly, finding comfort in her steady presence. These two sweet souls are looking for a home where they can heal together, bringing double the love to their next chapter.

Dolly and Ollie have their adoption fee waived and as part of our "Adopt A Cat, We Will Bake You A Pie" promotion, we will bake you two pies (caramel apple or pumpkin) if you adopt them! Stop by the shelter and ask about Dolly and Ollie today, we are open 11am-6pm for adoptions.

Blueberries for breakfast! Our small animals love getting a fresh fruit treat!

Did you know that blueberries are a tasty and nutritious treat for rabbits and chinchillas too? Like all treats, blueberries should only be given sparingly and as part of a well-balanced diet. A high-quality hay should make up the majority of a chinchilla's and rabbit's diet!

Interested in learning more about small animals? Thinking about adopting a small animal friend? Come by the shelter and talk to our adoption counselors about their specific needs to see if a rabbit or chinchilla is the right fit for you! We are open 11am-6pm for adoptions!

It's back again! Our favorite adoption promo of the year! Read on for cats, pie and fee waived adoptions!

Once again we find ourselves with many adult cats looking for homes, and we're seeing the length of time the animals spend here at the shelter continuing to increase. So from Thursday, November 21st to Tuesday, November 26th, we are waiving adoption fees for all cats over 1 year old!

Here is the pie portion of this concept - we want our pets to find loving homes so badly, that we are going to be baking homemade pies (pumpkin or caramel apple) for any family who adopts an adult cat from 11/21-11/26!

The bakers on our team will be hard at work Wednesday night baking away, so come in before the holiday to bring home a best friend and reserve your dessert baked by animal-loving shelter staff! A new family pet, a delicious dessert, and some very thankful LCAS staff- what more is there to be thankful for?

Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) has charged Sandra Ulrike Landgraf, 70, of Sterling, with two counts of felony animal cruelty and one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty following the discovery of two deceased dogs in her home and one dog in emaciated condition running at large.

On the evening of October 31, 2024, LCAS Humane Law Enforcement Officers responded to a call regarding a stray dog that had been found roaming near Sugarland Drive in Sterling. The dog, which was in extremely poor condition, had a microchip, which led authorities to Landgraf.

Officers attempted to contact Landgraf at her residence and found the home to be empty. In the course of the investigation to locate Landgraf, it was determined that two additional dogs had also been left inside the home for an extended period of time. Loudoun County Animal Services, the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office and Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office executed a general search warrant on November 4, 2024, and found the conditions in the home to be consistent with extreme hoarding and also found the remains of two Chinese Crested mix dogs.

When Humane Law Enforcement Officers made contact with Landgraf, she stated that she had not entered the home since at least the spring of 2024 and that the dogs had not been provided with food or water since her last entry. The surviving dog, “Elvis,” a 10-year-old Chinese Crested mix, is believed to have escaped in October through a gap in the property’s fence and survived through consuming trash, rodents, insects and the bodies of his deceased littermates.

“This case is heartbreaking, in that the suffering of these dogs was completely preventable,” said Director of Animal Services Nina Stively. “At LCAS, we offer a judgement-free zone for surrendering a pet that you can no longer care for. We always want to support our community’s pet owners, but there is no excuse to move out and leave your pets without food, water or care.” Information on how to surrender a pet in Loudoun County is online at loudoun.gov/SurrenderPets.

Landgraf is scheduled to face the criminal charges in Loudoun’s General District Court on December 10, 2024. A conviction of a Class 6 felony carries a possible penalty of imprisonment of one to five years, or confinement in jail for not more than 12 months, and/or a possible fine of not more than $2,500. A conviction of a Class 1misdemeanor in the Commonwealth of Virginia carries a maximum penalty of up to a $2,500 fine per count and one year in jail.
