Happy clients make us happy! Here is what Tina said about Wakefield Law helping with her daughter’s personal injury case!

“My daughter was in a car accident two years ago and I was unable to get all on the medical records together no matter how hard I tried. I realized time was running out and Charles Wakefield was referred to us. I'm so glad we called. Everyone at the office was kind and wonderful to work with. Mr. Wakefield fought hard for my daughter and we are thrilled with her settlement package. I will not hesitate to call them again (much sooner next time).”

In January, 2025, Virginia raised the minimum auto liability coverage to $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for bodily injury, with $25,000 for property damage. This change was enacted to attempt to ensure better protection for accident victims. However, our experience has been these minimums can leave clients without recourse to recover their medical expenses after an accident. Make sure you are working with a knowledgeable and trustworthy insurance broker so that you have coverage in the event of a catastrophe!

Everyone should know that our firm has three areas of specialization: Estate Planning, Contract Law/Collections, and Personal Injury. Here are three tips about our areas that we talk about with our clients every day!

ESTATE PLANNING: Why You Need More Than Just a “Simple” Will
A will is important—but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. In Virginia, a comprehensive estate plan should include powers of attorney and an advance medical directive at a minimum. These documents ensure your wishes are honored while you're alive, not just after.

CONTRACT LAW: Verbal Agreements in Virginia — Are They Binding?
Yes, many verbal agreements are enforceable in Virginia—but with major limitations. Without a written contract, it’s your word against theirs, which can get messy fast. Certain deals (like real estate sales) must be in writing to be valid. Also, there is a difference in the statute of limitations! Three years for verbal agreements and five years for written agreements. If you’re unsure about a contract’s enforceability, it’s time to consult a lawyer before it costs you.

INJURED IN A CAR ACCIDENT? Here’s What You Need to Know
Virginia is one of the few states that still follows pure contributory negligence. That means if you're even 1% at fault, you may be barred from recovering damages. Insurance companies know this—and use it to their advantage. That’s why you need an experienced personal injury attorney to help you through the process!

Personal property can often cause conflict when it comes to inheritance splits between siblings. Little items that hold more sentimental value than financial can cause significant rifts and stress on relationships. We always advise our clients that if there are any items you’d call “heirloom,” or any items that one child has made a comment about wanting after you’re gone, it’s very important to get it in writing within your estate plan. Unfortunately, we see those conflicts all too frequently, and they are very often avoidable with proper planning and communication. Give us a call to learn more! 703.771.9740

New parents have so much going on after a new baby comes. The whirlwind of parenting a newborn, the lack of sleep, the hustle and bustle of family coming over to meet the baby, and constant pediatrician visits can leave you with your hands full. However, one of the most important things to do when your family grows in size is making sure you have your guardianship papers set and in place. If something were to happen to a young parent, there is nothing that’s more important than making sure there is a safety net for the child and a loving guardian to help them grow. If you have any questions, about guardianship, give us a call or shoot us an email – we can have all of our meetings virtually except for the in-person signing of the documents, and we welcome babies and other children to the signing meeting! We’ll find a way to make space for everyone. 703.771.9740 or [email protected]

Happy clients make us happy! Here is what James said about working with Michael on the estate planning process:
“Not enough stars! My wife and I were fortunate to find Mike Wakefield. We were put at ease at initial meeting. He spent time learning about our needs and expertly translated them into Trust, Wills, POAs etc. Wakefield law has efficient process. Our needs were met quickly for many products and at the end, the signing went quickly; followed by Wakefield filing our documents with Loudoun County. We have utmost confidence our legal matters were handled well. Money well spent for piece of mind. We had other lawyers do wills for each of us and those lawyers were money wasted.”
