BaseNest | Juneteenth

Today is Juneteenth (June 19, 1865.)

That's the date Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that enslaved people were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two and a half years earlier. Enforcement took until boots hit the ground.

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. It's now officially recognized as a paid day off for federal employees, which means many of you in the DoD and GS workforce have today off.

More than a day off, it's a day worth understanding. Freedom promised isn't the same as freedom delivered. The gap matters.

BaseNest was built by a retired Navy Senior Chief who has lived that gap in different ways across 26 years of service. We build for every service member, veteran, and DoD civilian, regardless of background; because the housing challenges of military life don't care where you come from.

Here is what the timeline actually looks like:

Orders drop → TLE window opens at old station → You have 21 days total between old and new station combined → Movers, school enrollment, and housing search happen simultaneously

That 21-day window goes faster than it sounds.

TLE is one of the most misunderstood entitlements in the JTR.
Here is the actual rule:
For a CONUS PCS, you get a combined maximum of 21 days of TLE — split across your old and new duty station. One pool, not two separate allocations.
What TLE covers: lodging costs and a partial meal and incidental allowance.
What it does not cover: every dollar of your hotel bill if you pick a property above the per-diem rate.
The play: find furnished short-term housing at or below the per-diem lodging rate at your gaining station. Your TLE stretches further and your DTS voucher does not get kicked back.

Most short-term rental platforms are open to anyone.

BaseNest is not.

Every renter on BaseNest is verified against agency credentials and/or DD-214. Every host goes through the same process.

This is not a policy statement. It is an operational choice Moises Morla made when he started BaseNest after 26 years in the Navy. The platform exists because the general rental market does not serve military travelers well; and trust is the reason.

Verified both sides. That is the baseline.

1. Listing photos — natural light, every room, clean staging
2. Utilities policy — included, split, or tenant-paid — stated clearly
3. Minimum stay set — 30 nights is standard for PCS renters
4. Furnished essentials in place — bed, linens, kitchen basics, wifi
5. Lease break clause — allows early exit with valid military orders
6. DTS receipt setting enabled in your host dashboard
7. Verification badge reviewed — confirm your host profile is complete
