Veterans who were assigned to a remote installation in Uzbekistan early in the Global War on Terrorism and now have cancer in their urinary or reproductive systems may soon be eligible for fast-tracked benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. VA Secretary Denis McDonough announced that the department will start the federal process for adding bladder, urethra, and other genitourinary cancers to a list of diseases presumed to be caused by serving at Karshi Khanabad Air Base, also known as K2 or Camp Stronghold Freedom, in the Central Asia nation.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has started the process to add bladder, urethral cancer and other genitourinary cancers to the list of illnesses presumed to be related to serving at a former Soviet installation in Uzbekistan.

The Veterans Day National Committee hosts the annual Veterans Day observance each year on Nov. 11 at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony commences precisely at 11:11 a.m. ET with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries.

This year, 56 communities across 29 states and the District of Columbia will host VA-recognized Veterans Day observances to pay tribute to America’s heroes.

The Department of Veterans Affairs says it has housed 47,925 veterans experiencing homelessness in FY 2024, surpassing its goal to house 41,000 veterans by 16.9 percent and marking the most significant number of veterans housed in a single year since FY 2019. According to a statement, the VA also ensured that 96 percent of the veterans housed during FY 2024 did not return to homelessness.

America's Warrior Partnership (AWP) has helped countless veterans find access to mental health and other resources, offering "hope," as the nonprofit's leader put it to Newsweek, to those re-entering civilian life, some of whom may struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. This past week, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) asked veterans to check in with one another. Veterans and their families were encouraged to pledge to talk to 10 veteran friends during Veteran Buddy Check Week. According to the RAND Corporation, a research and analysis nonprofit aimed at improving policy and decision-making, one in five veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars experience PTSD or major depression. Transportation problems account for 1.8 million missed VA medical appointments annually, costing the agency about $4.4 billion a year. The VA, in response, began rolling out VA-Uber Health Connect nationwide in 2024, leveraging the popular rideshare service to fill transportation gaps for veterans. The rollout follows a two-year pilot program that tested and adapted the rideshare service for veterans’ medical appointments at VA facilities in several states.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has started a program to help veterans get to VA medical appointments using Uber, though the service isn’t effective in rural areas where travel is still a problem.

In its effort to combat veteran homelessness, Tunnel to Towers Foundation broke ground Tuesday on its Detroit Veterans Village in Southfield. The New York-based nonprofit, which supports first responders and military veterans, will transform the former Holiday Inn Express & Suites at 25100 Northwestern Highway into housing for 85 veterans. When it opens in late 2025, the space will also provide support services for those veterans, including job training, education assistance, benefits assistance, mental health support and addiction treatment.

When it opens in late 2025 the Detroit Veterans Village in Southfield will house 85 veterans.
