After listening to the air traffic audio recording, it sounds like the Piper pilot crossed mid-field and was cleared to land on runway 30L.
The student pilot and flight instructor were doing "pattern work" in a Cessna and were cleared for 30R.
The Piper is a low-wing aircraft, so the pilot's view below the plane is limited. The Cessna is a high-wing aircraft, so the student pilot and instructor's view above is limited.
The Piper crossing mid-field means the pilot is making left turns to ultimately line up for its final approach at a much faster rate than if the Piper had done a full leg of the pattern.
The Piper was cleared to land on 30L by the controller, and the audio recording leads me to believe the Piper pilot thought he was lined up on 30L. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
The configuration of these two planes, one being high-wing and the other low, also seems to be a factor in this tragedy.

Sunday, July 17, 2022, my son and I took an early morning flight in and around North Las Vegas Airport. A few hours after we landed, a tragedy occurred when a pilot, in-bound from Northern Idaho, flying a mid-size private plane crashed into a student pilot and flight instructor who were flying a much smaller plane. All lives were lost.
Shortly after the crash, I received several text messages and phone calls from family and friends who know how much time I spend flying in and out of North Las Vegas Airport. Most were messaging and calling to make sure it wasn't me, but a few were messaging and calling about what happens now.
What happens now is the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate over the course of the next several months. Simultaneous with the NTSB's investigation, insurance companies will "investigate."
A friend of mine was the first on the scene, and by all accounts, there isn't much to investigate. What the insurance company will call the "facts of loss" are not complicate and are already widely known, yet the insurance company will use the pending NTSB investigation to delay payment to the family of the flight instructor and his student pilot. Frankly, the insurance company will use every conceivable excuse to not pay until its investigation is "complete."
In all likelihood AIG, or one of its subsidiaries, insures both planes and the flight school. The AIG insurance policies do not provide sufficient coverage to fairly compensate those who are directly affected. Most of these types of insurance policies have very high total limits, but the amount available to any single claimant is very low.
I regularly and freely admit my strong bias against insurance companies and add my "soapbox" commentary to almost every conversation I have about insurance companies and how they mishandle claims.
I am pushing this very basic information about what happened and these types of insurance policies out to the community because I want to help.
This accident was tragic. The insurance policies are unique. The various claims require immediate attention.
I am an injury lawyer with unique experience and perspective to offer all those affected. If I can be of any assistance whatsoever to anyone directly affected, do not hesitate to contact me.

On a particularly busy Friday Afternoon, it was great to receive a heartfelt "Thank You" from two of our favorite Canadian clients. Canadian maple syrup is the perfect compliment to Saturday morning pancakes. This thoughtful gift is the perfect compliment to our hard working team of dedicated professionals for the hard work we do everyday on behalf of the clients we love.

We could not be more proud of Ian McMenemy and his tireless effort in trying the case of a very deserving client. Following the failed pre-trial settlement attempt where the defense only offered $35,000, we knew the only source of justice for our client was to try her case. Ian and our entire trial team worked 20 hours per day for the week leading up to and during the two week trial. The jury returned a verdict in the amount of $428,000.
This recent jury verdict represents Justice for our client! It also confirms our dedication to obtain maximum compensation for each of our individual clients.

We were recently paid a great compliment by a prospective client. The prospective client is an insurance adjuster for one of the largest insurance companies in the United States, and he contacted us for assistance with a claim he filed with his own insurance company. (His own insurance company is also one of the largest insurance companies in the United States but different from his employer.)
As with all potential clients, we listened, provided initial feedback, and otherwise laid out for him what we know to be the best approach for handling a situation such as his.
Toward the end of the consultation, we asked him how he heard about us. He said he got our name from a fellow insurance adjuster who knew our firm is "tough" and actually cares about our clients.
We regularly get referrals from current and former clients. It is not as common to get referrals from insurance adjusters. We take this referral from an insurance adjuster as a great compliment and further validation of the great work we do on behalf of all our clients everyday.

Stories like these hit close to home. As a pilot and personal injury attorney, I can empathize with both the pilot and the plaintiffs.
Pilot training involves reviewing and mastering the emergency procedures for when you encounter a sudden loss of power. Mid-flight, several thousand feet above the earth, a sudden loss of power means your plane becomes a glider, you have several minutes to try and address the issue, and if all else fails, glide to a safe place to land.
This story involves the most dreaded sudden loss of power...immediately after takeoff. With only a few hundred feet above the earth, a congested urban area, and a busy freeway to deal with, I'm sure this pilot did everything he could. Unfortunately, this incident ended in tragedy. Some questions may never be answered.
If you, or a loved one, has questions regarding an aviation injury case, do not hesitate to contact me. Though some questions may never be answered, an attorney who can analyze the facts from both the legal and the pilot's perspectives will give you or your loved one peace of mind.

Relatives of a couple killed in a plane crash in Weber County in July are suing the relatives of the other couple killed in the same crash, according to court documents.
