25th Navajo Nation Council honors courage and legacy of Navajo Code Talkers

Today, the 25th Navajo Nation Council proudly honors the Navajo Code Talkers for their courageous service and sacrifice during World War II.

These young Diné men answered the call to serve and used the strength of Diné bizaad to create a code that helped protect lives and contributed to the Allied victory in the Pacific. Their legacy reflects the resilience, strength and determination of the Navajo people.

On Navajo Nation Code Talker Day, we honor those who served, remember those who have passed on, and recognize the surviving Code Talkers and their families. We carry their legacy forward by preserving our language, culture and identity for future generations.

I was glad to see our Senators put this on for our community. However it was disappointing that not a single state agency officials bothered to show up to hear the people’s concerns. My office is watching this situation closely.

The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 was the most successful coordinated rebellion against the Spanish colonists. Pueblo nations fought in unity to resist colonial powers to drive out the Spanish colonizers in New Mexico. A group of Pueblo runners were set out to all Pueblo’s carrying knotted cords that represented the number of days remaining up until the day of the rebellion. We honor our Pueblo relatives who came together in resistance to preserve their cultures, languages, traditions and knowledge to future generations to come.
