In June, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum formally announced the Universal Health Service and the first phase of its implementation.
The government has begun rolling out a new Universal Health Credential, intended to allow citizens to access care across Mexico's public healthcare institutions regardless of which system they were previously enrolled in. Registration for the credential started with older adults and is expanding gradually.
The plan is to integrate Mexico's three major public healthcare systems, IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS-Bienestar, into a more unified network. Universal emergency care access is expected to roll out in stages starting in 2027, with additional services added in the years that follow.
It's not all clear paths ahead just yet. Mexico has announced universal healthcare initiatives before; the real test now will be whether hospitals have enough doctors, medicines, funding, and infrastructure to make the promise a reality.
