I-80 is treacherous and we're experiencing devastating wrecks here in Wyoming. If you are a victim in a car accident, here are the 5 immediate steps you need to take to preserve your legal rights.

1. Hire an attorney. We know, we know, no one likes attorneys. However, if you're suffering from injuries, having someone who is experienced on your side is the best way to maximize payouts from the driver's insurance company. (Plus you shouldn't have to pay an attorney, unless they successfully recover money for you.)

2. Do NOT give any details about the car wreck in writing or on social media (e.g. via email, Facebook, TikTok, etc.) because the insurance reps will be trolling your accounts in an attempt to back you into a corner when you're trying to recoup your damages. It's ok to give your loved ones updates about your health.

3. The owner of the vehicle that caused the accident/insurance company will want to destroy the vehicle ASAP. You need your attorney to immediately send out a letter instructing the insurance company to preserve the vehicle because it is evidence in a future lawsuit.

4. Do NOT allow your vehicle to be destroyed, for the same reason as no. 3. You may need it as evidence to prove your case in a future lawsuit.

5. Do NOT accept a settlement or payout from the insurance company without first visiting with an attorney, because it will likely preclude you from receiving any future compensation from the accident.
