On September 9, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the state's 2021 registration law cannot be applied to anyone whose offense happened before July 1, 2011. Michigan State Police started working through the database immediately and removed more than 20,000 people within two days. Most of those removals happened automatically, with no filing and no attorney involved.

Some names were missed. An offense date entered wrong years ago, or a conviction from another state, can keep a name on the registry that should have been removed.
