The REAL ID requirement for domestic air travel within the United States, goes into effect on May 7, 2025. To travel domestically present either: (1) A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or (2) REAL ID identification card, or (3) a valid country passport to board domestic flights. If you are a lawfully present non-U.S. citizen, including permanent and non-permanent residents, you are eligible to apply for a REAL ID driver's license or ID card or turn your current Michigan driver's license or state ID into a REAL ID.

• FACT: Immigration is associated with lower crime rates, making communities safer. Immigrants are also less likely to commit crimes than native-born residents. The potential consequences of criminal behavior for an immigrant are significantly more serious than for a U.S. Citizen.

• FACT: Immigration benefits American workers, resulting in more jobs and higher wages for U.S.-born workers. Immigrants in Ohio, for example, make up over 6% of the labor force, accounting for 8% of entrepreneurs, nearly 12% of STEM workers, and 5% of nurses in the state. They are vital to the State's Economy.

There are a lot of harmful myths about immigrants circulating right now. Some of the worst claims are coming out of Springfield, Ohio,
• MYTH: Haitian migrants living in Springfield, Ohio are in the United States illegally.
• FACT: Most Haitian migrants living in Springfield are living and working there legally under Temporary Protected Status. The U.S. government issues TPS to certain nationals whose countries are experiencing ongoing turmoil that makes their return dangerous or impossible. Haiti has been gripped by gang violence, political unrest, and devastating earthquakes in recent years, so many Haitians have been granted this legal temporary immigration status.

Good News! President Biden announced executive actions that will allow certain noncitizen spouses and children of U.S. citizens to obtain work authorization and legal permanent resident (LPR) status and provide eligible DACA recipients and other Dreamers with a path to receive a work visa.

Biden announced "parole in place" for undocumented spouses and children of U.S. citizens, which will streamline the green card process.

The most recent decision allows DACA recipients to renew their status but leaves an uncertain future. I join AILA in urging Congress to step up and provide permanent protections for Dreamers once and for all:

AILA President Farshad Owji and Executive Director Ben Johnson respond to the latest ruling by Judge Andrew Hanen against DACA, calling it incorrect given that the DACA program “clearly falls within the legal authority of the executive branch” and urging Congress to protect Dreamers permanently.

APPLY EARLY FOR MI DRIVERS LICENSE RENEWAL: Individuals with pending I-765 applications are eligible to apply for a temporary renewal of their driver’s license. The Secretary of State’s office will have to submit the individual’s information for a SAVE verification check and the temporary license will not be issued until the SAVE check comes back. This process is taking a long time in SOME cases (4 months). Drivers License Renewal applicants are encouraged to apply early to avoid a lapse in their DL validity.
