A DUI can affect more than your driver’s license.

In Maryland, a DUI charge doesn’t necessarily mean your auto insurance will be canceled. Insurers generally can’t cancel your policy mid-term simply because you were charged with a DUI. However, a conviction can affect your coverage when it’s time to renew.

A DUI conviction can lead to higher premiums, and insurers may choose not to renew a policy based on certain DUI convictions within the previous three years. If an insurer plans to cancel or non-renew your policy for reasons other than nonpayment, they generally must provide at least 45 days’ advance notice.

The consequences can also include fines, license suspension or revocation, ignition interlock requirements, and a criminal record if convicted.
