Before wiring money for a real estate settlement: STOP. CALL. VERIFY. 🚨
Real estate wire fraud often begins with an email that appears to come from someone involved in the transaction. The message may look legitimate—even using familiar names, logos and transaction details—but direct your money to a fraudulent account.
Before sending any wire:
✔️ Call your settlement company using a trusted number you already have
✔️ Verify the recipient, bank and account information verbally
✔️ Be suspicious of last-minute changes or urgent requests
✔️ Never use a new phone number supplied in a questionable email
✔️ Do not send financial information by unsecured email
If you believe a fraudulent wire has already been sent, contact your financial institution and settlement company immediately. You should also report the incident to the FBI at IC3.gov. Time is critical when attempting to recover wired funds.
