Colorado has mailed you your ballot and you can now safely and securely vote! Learn your state’s election rules. Plan your vote. If possible, vote early. If possible, don’t vote in person. Don’t rely on the mail and the post office if you don’t have to. In Colorado, you can instead use one of the many secure and official drop boxes around your county. You can do it now. Afterwards, track your ballot online to ensure it is counted on Election Day.

Be informed. Don’t delay. Stay safe. Have your voice heard. Have your vote counted.

Governor Polis is set to sign a sweeping police reform bill mandating body cameras for all officers engaged in enforcement with citizens, public release of the footage within 21 days, data collection and review of all encounters and demographics to assess bias and future reforms, banning choke holds and limits use of deadly force when a subject is fleeing, potential loss of POST certification (i.e. lose ability to remain a police officer) for violations, removal of qualified immunity (police can be held personally liable for excessive force lawsuits), criminalizes failure to intervene when another officer is engaging in excessive force, and limits use of chemical agents and projectiles at protesters.

A bill with new requirements for police officers and departments across the state of Colorado is one step closer to becoming law.

Colorado joins 21 other states and has abolished the death penalty, an important step for criminal justice reform in this country.

The most heinous criminal offenders among us can still be punished and kept out of the community forever by receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, tax payers save money on a failed and wasteful bureaucracy, and it can no longer be used to unfairly and disproportionately target the disenfranchised, minorities, and people of color. Our criminal justice system is imperfect and death, by its very nature, is final. Consider this: according to the ACLU, Since 1973, over 156 death row inmates have been released due to factual innocence. How many other innocent people slipped through the cracks and were killed because of this practice: one is enough.

We have decided as a society that murder is wrong. We have decided as a society that two wrongs don't make a right. Yet state sponsored killing continues around this country.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed a bill Monday March 23, 2020 abolishing the death penalty in Colorado. This has been an effort led by criminal justice reformers since 2007. Polis also commuted...

Aurora PD has second officer who similarly escaped DUI investigation and charge...

A female Aurora police officer apparently drove to work drunk in December, appeared to coworkers to be intoxicated, blew a .138 on a portable breath test an hour after arriving, but never faced a criminal DUI investigation.

DA Brauchler describes the Aurora PD as turning a blind eye to protect their fellow officer from a DUI investigation and likely prosecution, but stops short of calling it a cover up. This type of behavior, as DA Brauchler acknowledges, puts a stain on the department and all police in the eyes of an already skeptical public that questions (among other things) whether we can trust our law enforcement to pursue equal justice without favor. I believe the majority of law enforcement strives to uphold the law, but this involved multiple officers and the upper brass, which raises real and grave concerns. It begs the question, what other decisions, even outside the realm of favor, are law enforcement willing to make out of self interest rather than fair justice under the law.

District Attorney George Brauchler says after a lengthy investigation, he has concluded he cannot file DUI charges against Aurora Police Officer Nate Meier.
